His idea has been that if the people could get the facts about the rule permitting a one-man lfiibuster they would bring sufficlent pressure to bear to have that rule changed. ssembles there is vever, that there has any material change in the Sen- ate sentiment on this point and leaders on both sides say frankly there is little lkelihood that any effort at modification can make headway dur- ing the new session. i “‘Hazing" Is Opponents _of rules, Republi pected. hange in the well as Demo-| crats, have otten the lecture | which the Vicz, President read to the Senate in the presence of the Presi- dent, the Supreme Court, the House and Diplomatic Corps and the abrupt manner in which he swept aside the time-honored custom of swearing in new Senators in small groups. Administration leaders during the brief special session of the Senate lust March were able ot hold off any open and vitriolic attacks on Mr. Dawes from the floor, such as some Senators had planned, but they expect some ef- s at “hazing” of the Vice Presi- & the next few months. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, SEES FUEL PROBLEM SOLVED IN WASTE GAS Report on Survey Foresees Future Salvage by Cities of Product Now Ignored. URBANA, 11L, December 4.—Cities of the future will bave their gas works located near their plants for wastes, and for fuel the disposal of sewage sclentitic thrift will r ey e counted upon to oppose the Vice President in his rules fight with all of the vigor and influence at their command. Mr. Dawes has some support in the Senate itself for a modification of the rule under which a single Senator at the close of a session can block leg- any time in the jon long delay a final vote by , the Re- ight and heat from the gas obtained 4 by-product in the treatment of sewage 18 a practicable possibility, ac- cording to the report made by the Iilinols State water survey to the hoard of natural resources and con- servation of that State. Experiments conducted by the survey indlcate that in a city of 50,000 inhabitants the quantity of combustible gas given off cach day by the sewage in the treat- ment tanks is more than 90,000 cubic ns 70 per cent me- ombustible constitu- and has a heating value equivalent to 700 British ther- mal units per cuble foot, while the value of the common fuel gas {s 550 to 600 units. The other constituents of the gas, carbon dioxide and nitro- gen, are Inert, and the gas itself has 1o more odor than ordinary fuel gas. The gas is produced in the digestion process which the sewage liquor un- dergoes in the Imhot treatment tanks and formerly escaped into the afr. It has been known for a number of years that this product will burn readily, but clty officlals and sewage plant operators have not heretofore realized the gross value of the gas that goes to waste each day. 1925.
