By the Associated Press NEW YORK, November -Stock prices reacted sharply today after an early demonstration of strength had swept many industrial issues into new high ground for the year on gains of L to 4 points. With United States Steel selling at the highest price in its history, heavy buving was at- tracted from many quarters, quickly elevating it to a new peak at 139% before it crumbled under an ava- lanche of week end realizing sales. Much Short Selling. Short_seiling also developed in con; siderable volume, promoted by pro- fessionals, who considered the techni- cal position of the market ripe for a -eaction, but not until new high records had been established by Gen- eral Motors at 149%, United States Rubber at $9%, Allled Chemical at 11815, Texas Gulf Sulphur at 1213 and Schulte Cigar Stores at 126. These galns were wiped out when the market turned downward in the final hour, with pronounced weak- ness developing in the motors and high-priced specialties. General Motors Reacts. General Motors reacted to 1463, General Electric fell from 336 to 330 and Dupont from 270 to 259, while Woolworth, Hudson and United States Cast Iron Pipe sold 3 to 4 points below previous closing figures. New specialties were brought for- ward, giving the market an irregular appearance at the close. Sales approximated 1,300,000 shares. MANY NEW RECORDS. Wide Variety of Issues in Week End Advances. This resulted in a sharp decline in Hudson, as compared vith the final prices of the preceding . and losses of a fraction of a point o over a point in other active shares i"isher Body struck a new top for 1926. The new high records, in addition to the steels and one or two of the motors, included National Lead, Al- lied Chemical, Manhattan Shirt, New York Canner chulte, Consolidated Cigar, Commercial Investment Trust South Porto Rico Sugar, Granby Cor solidated, Van Raalte, Texas Gulf Sulphur, Coca-Co Loew, Durham Hosiery and Telautograph. General Electric ran up 3 points and more and American Woolen was high- er. The Commercial Solvent were in demand, and so was C Leather preferred. United States Realty was irregular. NEW YORK, November 7.—In the foreign exchanges there was a mod- erate rally in French franecs at the opening. Doubtless the published in- timation from Washington that the edministration would not object to American bankers extending a new credit to France for the purpose of supporting the franc was influential | in this respect. It was not clear whether the policy of prohibiting loans to countries which have not funded their war debts to the United States had been altered, or whether this was simply an exception allowed because of the crisis in French finances. Yarns were in demand by knitters, weavers and in- sulators for next year's consumption. Raw silk advanced 10 cents a potnd locally following a similar recovery at Yokohama. BALDWIN GETS ORDERS. NEW YORK, November 7 (#).— Baldwin Locomotive Works has re- celved an order from Missourl Pacific for 10 Santa Fe type engines and has also booked 8 engines for Brazil, 3 for Japan, 6 Mikados for the Consollidated Rallroad of Cuba and 4 engines for Colombla. g ———— WALL STREET FEATURES. NEW YORK, November 7.—Trad- ing in bonds proceeded slowly at the close of the week, but prices held firm, the market as a whole maintain- Ing the improvement of the two pre- ceding days. In the United States Government list Treasury 4%s were again strong under limited supply. They sold today only about $1 on the $100 below the high of the year. This demand for the longest term Government {ssue is more significant of the trend in money than are the fluctuations in the Liberties of shorter maturities, although on the week >very active Government obligation is higher than it was seven days ago. Even some of the first-mortgage ralls, recently neglected, have hardened during the week. 1 Buying kept up in the foreign list, with Brazil's 8s duplicating their rec. ord high. It is belleved that Lon- don competition with American in- vestment bankers, now that the Brit- ish ban on foreign loans has been lifted, will show itself first in South American financing. Bollvia 8 sold above 99 for the first time. There was not much change in quotations for the active European issues, even French bonds being relatively strong. In domestic utilities the feature was a sharp advance in St. Joseph Rallway, Light, Heat and Power Gs of 1937, to a new high. The com. pany is a Citles Service subsidiary. Denver and Rio Grande Western b8 was strong. International Mercantile Marine 6s made a new high. INGOT OUTPUT GROWS. Gross Tons Ahead of September and of 1824 Figures. NEW YORK, November Increased production of steel in the United States in October is re- | ported by the American Iron and Steel Institute, the total of 3.892.946 | gross tons being approximately 400, | 000 tons more than in September and compared with 3,125,418 in October of 1924 Only twice this year, January and March, was October’s output ex- ceeded, production in each of those two mionths having been more than 4,198,000 tons. Production for the 10 months of 1925 was 36,303,634 tons against 30, in the same perlod of 1924, Daily production in October aver- aged 144,183 tons for 27 working days, a gain of 7 per cent over the dally averages the month before.
