DECISION DELAYED | ON WARNING AUTOISTS | Suggestion of Cards to Call At-| tention to Overtime Parking Meets Objections. i | flic officials are in-| quiring into a plan used in some other cities of i ing warning cards| to motorists the first time they are caught for overtime parking with the understanding they will be taken to court for future violations, it has not Leen decided whether the system will be put into operation here Commissioner Fenning said yester- | day Traffic Director Eldridge had men ned the idea to him informally, but had not made a formal recommen tion. It is understood that some, legal objections to the plan have | been raised and that traffic officials | are seeking to find a way around | these obstacles. | One objection that has been brought | up is that a man caught the second | or third time for overtime parking might claim he never saw the warning card left $n his machine at the time of the first violation and that conse- quently he is entitled to be excused with a warning. The theory of the plan is that it would give more consideration to the man who parks overtime for the first etime and would also enable the Traffic Bureau to deal more stringently with the repeated violafor. The warning | card would be in two sections, half | @ Leing left in the machine and the stub filed_under an index system in the Traffic Bureau. Although tr TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS. Robert B. Nelson, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, star- red today in the role of policeman, judge and good Samaritan, all be- fore breakfast. He was.on his way to the neighborhood grocery, carrying a five-gallon ofl can when @ letter carrier called his atten- tion to three apple pickers helping themselves to bananas in front of the store. The rector ran back home, jumped into his automobile and overtook the men three blocks away. He compelled them to get into the auto and return to the store, where he also required them to pay for the bananas they had stolen. Told by the men they were on their way to an orchard several miles from town, the parson of- fered to to take them to_thelr destination, and they accepted, talking about the size of the crop and the condition of the weather as they jogged along. HELICOPTER COVERS TEN MILES IN TEST Rises, Like Bird, 1,000 Feet in Air—Maneuvered Easily With Rotary Propeller Working. By the Associated Press. FARNBOROUGH, England, Octo- ber 16.—Hundreds of spectators watch- ed the second ascension of the heli- coper invented by Don Juan de La Clerva, which made its successtul initial flight on Monday. Capt. Courtney took the machine over Laffans Plain and covered about 10 miles. From the airdrome the helicopter arose to an_altitude of more than 1,000 feet, then swooped to within 100 feet of the ground and again shot vertically into the alr. It was maneuvered easily and with the overhead propeller workini The ma flapping as rotary ine landed with its wings rcefully as a bird. Previous descriptions of the Cierva helicopter, of “autogyro.” said it con- sisted of a fuselage with a 130-horse- power engine driving a propeller in the ordinary way. —Above the ma- chine on_a vertical shaft are four wings. When re- volving at 120 revolutions a minute these extert more than sufficient force to lift the machine. The re- volving wings, it is claimed, will per- mit the machine to descend safely even with the engine dead. MT.
