ACIDS IN BODY MAKE HEALTH EDUGATION URGED BY BALLO School Superintendent Sees Instruction on That Line as Highly Important. Health education is one of the most fmportant subjects in the educational program of foday, Superintendent of Schools Frank W. Ballou told Dr. Lindsly Willlams, managing director of the National Tuberculosis Asso tion, in response to his request for statement concerning health educa tion in the District public schools. A copy of Dr. Ballou's letter has been sent to all school officers at the rve-| quest of the board of directors of the Washington Tuberculosis Association. Text of Ballou's Letter. Dr. Ballou’s letter follows: “I believe that health education is one of the most important subjects in the educational program of today. The assumption in the past that health in struction should and can he success- fully carried on in the home has proven in large .mgasure to be erro- neous. October 16.—The stu- dents of St. Andrew’s University have agreed 10 nominate George Bernard Shaw and John Galsworthy for the rectorship of “the University in suc- cession to” Rudyvard Kipling, whose term of office expires today. Nominations are set for October 28 and the election for October 31. In a llvely article published only a few s ago in the Student Leader, a pamphlet issued by the Labor Club of Glasgow University, George Ber- nard Shaw remarked that the use of a rectorial election was to make “a periodical sesture of insult to aca- demic education.”” The article was written mn_support of the candidacy of Sidney Webh, former president of the Board of de. for the lord rec- torship ot Glasgow University, a post | for whicn Austen Chamberiain, for- eign sec v, and G. By Science Service BERLIN, October 16.—It is the in- herent fault of man himself if he is poisoned by wood alcohol. Dr. H. Leo, who has made a study of methyl al- cohol poisoning, says that ordinary grain aleohol is more poisonous than wood alcohol to isolated cells and or- zans. The high toxlicity of wood al- cohol is due to certaln chemical changes taking place in the alcohol after it is taken into the body. There it is changed into formic acid, and this is the substance that does the.| damage ascribed to the alcohol. Dr. Leo tried out the effect of formic acid on dogs in the laboratory and found that the symptoms were iden- with those of wood alcohol. The tance not only produces a dan- us state of acidosis, but acts as a direct poison.
