THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, ROCKEFELLER SAVES VERSAILLES PALACE 10,000,000 Francs to Be Used for Destroying Fungus Which Rav- ages Halls and Chambers. By the Associated Press. PARIS, September 21.—The sum of more than 10,000,000 francs donated by John D. Rockefeller, jr., for the restoration of the Palace of Versallles will be utilized in the destruction of a microscoplc mushroom which is ravaging the woodwork of the beau- tiful halls and state chambers. Government scientists have discover-'| ed a way to kill the fungus growth, which attaches itself to the ancient timbers and causes them to crumble into mouldy powder. The process of exterminating it, however, is ®oth tedlous and expensive. The roof of the northern section and two of the wings of the Versailles Palace already have been repaired after months of delicate work by ex- pert masons at a cost equal to half of the Rockefeller gift. Small pieces of tile and stones had to be cut to fit into the spaces worn away by time and weather and then carefully cemented into position in the manner of a jig-saw puzzle. William Wells Bosworth of New York, Mr. Rockefeller's adviser on architectural problems, is supervising the work. He plans to start at once on the decaying sections above the “Hall of Mirrors,” where the Versallles treaty was signed in 1919. - Hawaii expects a record-breaking | | rush of tourists this season.
