FINANCIAL, SHARP ADVANCES IN MOTOR STOCKS General Motors, Hudson and Mack Trucks Today’s Market Leaders. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 19.—Sup- ported by a growing outside demand for stocks, operators for the rise again succeeded in bidding up prices in today’s brief, but active session of the market. Cumulative evidence of business im- provement and the plethora of funds available for both trade expansion and the purchase of securities, created bullish enthusiasm, which was particu- larly pronounced in the demand for motors and public utllities. General Motors crossed 102 to a record high and Dupont, which has targe General Motors holdings, Jumped 6 points. Hudson was bid up over 4 points to & new peake and a sudden revival of activity in Mack Trucks sent that stock up over 6 points above last night's close. The few soft spots that developed represented neither profit taking or selling inspired by special influence: The closing was firm. Total sales approximated 900,000 shares. WEAK SPOTS IN MARKET. Detroit Edison and Pullman Come Down in Trading. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 19.—The stock market in today’s 2-hour trad- ing manifested a good deal of uncer- tainty, despite the great strength in individual stocks. Realizing sales in quite a part of the list were heavy enough to offset new buying, and final price changes were a good deal mixed. But the main movements in particular stocks were upward. Hudson Motor came out with a re- port for the three months ended August 31 which astonished even those who have been most enthusi- astic over the business done by the automobile companies. The revelation that Hudson was earning at the rate of $21 a share accounted for the sud- den advance toward the close Friday and the continued upturn in the mar- ket today. General Motors was just as eagerly bought as was Hudson, and sold at much the highest price on record. Packard also made a new top, and the Plerce Arrows were up 1% to 2 points. Motor truck shares went along with Mack and White, the leaders. There was heavy trading in Stude- baker around and Jjust above Profit-taking was felt in Chrysler. Some Wesk Spots. High-priced issues changed sharply as usual. Harvester and Detroit Edi- son came down and Pullman sold off another 5 points, down more than 10 points from where it was selling Thursday. The advance in American Car and Foundry was resumed. Peo- plez Gas of Chicago was the feature among the public utilities. Montana Power and American and Foreign Power continued to rise. Air Reduc- tion ran up 3 points. New high rec- ords were made in both classes of American Tobacco stocks, in Reynolds B, International Business Machine, Atflantic Gulf and West Indies, Brook- lyn Edison, United Paper Board and Market Street Railway prior and sec- ond preferred. Further buying of Montana Power, which had been a leader among the public utility shares on Frida an incident. The belief pe Wall Street that this company go into the electric bond and share system. Special strength in Reynolds To- bacco B, which sold at a new higy for the vear, was attributed to the very favorable earnings and sound financial position of the company and to the expectation of a stock divi- dend. The stock dividend talk was not at all official, but the action of Reynolds B suggested to some the possibility of a distribution on the common before the year is over. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 19.—Ex- citement in the Florida Western and Northern 7 per cent bonds, which all week has represented the bond mar- ket's contribution the Florida land boom, abruptly subsided today. The bonds came down quite sharply, but on small transactions, indicating a very thin market. The most Interesting feature in the bond dealings of the near future is to be further offerings of forelgn bonds. Domestic financing needs have 0 fallen off that there are compara- tively few of these operations In prospect. The market, however, ex- pects to get a good deal of new busi- ness from across the water. New Foreign Issues. This morning definite announcement was made of two such issues to be brought out next week. One was a $10,000,000 offering of 7 per cent bonds of the State of Bremen, Germany, to be made at 95, part of which are to be placed in Holland and Switzerland. The other was an issue of 10,000,000 kroner 5% per cent sinking fund internal bonds of the City of Oslo, Norway, the bonds to run 20 years. Plans for further German financing received considerable impetus from the remarkable success of the German Agriculture Bank flotation. These bonds were selling around top figures again today, that is, around 94%4. Bolivia 8s Active. Bolivia 8s were active at a decline of a half point to 96%. French 7s sold between 93 and 93%. Corporation bonds were quiet. Mis- souri Pacific 4s were in moderate de- mand again just above 65 and the rise {n Market Street Rallway 7s con- tinued as the result of reports that negotlations for the sale of the prop- erty to the City of San Francisco had been reopened. Wilson Bonds in Spurt. NEW YORK, September 19.—No change in the recent character of bond trading was visible in today's early dealings. Prices still pointed upward but the advance was by no means uniform, embracing main the issues of railroads which has lately found favor in the stock market. Wilson and Co. 718 spurted up more than a point on reports that actual reorganization of the company would get under way soon after October 1. BUTTER PRICES HIGHER. Weekly Review Shows Receipts Lighter—Hot Weather Cause. CHICAGO, September 19 (#).—The butter markets during the week gen- erally followed an upward trend, with price advances ranging from % at New York to 1% cents at Chicago. While the markets were at all times in a firm position, trading was not marked by any spectacular activity. Receipts were considerably lighter than during the preceding week and also materially less than the same week in 1924, a result no doubt at- tributed to the hot weather znd un- favorable production conditions which | have prevailed for some time past. Quality also was materially affected and marks which have been running scored several points than was the case earlier in the sea- son. By the Associated Press CHICAGO, September 19.—Sharp setbacks in the price of corn have; been the outstanding feature of the grain trade this week. September de- livery of corn dropped to a new low price record for the season. Prospects that the 1925 yield of corn will be moved much earlier than usual were chiefly responsible. Compared with a week ago, the corn market this morn ing was 43, to 6 cents a bushel lower, with wheat at % cent to 1% cents ad- vance. Oats, 1 cent to 11 cents down, and provisions varying from §1.25 de- cline to 17 cents gain. Corn Safe From Frost. According to reports.at hand, the corn crop is further advanced this year than is generally the case, so much so that in the opinion of some authorities *he bulk of the crop is al- ready safe from frost. Moreover, ideal weather for matur- ing the crop has prevailed during much of the week. The market also was called upon to withstand the brunt of reports that there has been a surprising production of corn this sea- son east of Chicago, a territory likely to supply needs that most often are filled by shipments from here. Fe ample, the Ohio corn crop is offi estimated at 10,000,000 bushels the largest previous record. Improved pastures, as the result of beneficial rain: tended further to weaken the corn market and oats as well, notwithstanding the cheapne: oats. Prices Likely to Improve. Talk persisted. however, that feed- ing operations would be heavy t year because of the high price of hog: and that corn would be worth more money later in the season. In this con- nection it was pointed out that the bulk of sales in the hog market here | are running from 20 cents to 90 cents @ hundred pounds higher than a week | ago. Upturns in the value of wheat were ascribed to active domestic milling de- | mand which more than offset an ex- ceptional dearth of export business. Nearby deliveries of lard were in de- mand, but otherwise the provision market reflected me ueakne«s of corn. VODKA TO BE 'STRONGER By Cable to The Star and Chicago Daily News.
