All Rights Reserved. Reproductien Prohibited Selectivity—How It Is Attained. 1t {8 Interesting (o consider how rumors originate and grow up te be “‘authoritative’ statements. Many such misconceptions center about the aerial system. The first thing we will consider about an aerfal is the relation of length of aerial to efficlency of the recelyer, Most fans will tell you that the longer the aerial the greater dis- tance you can expect to get with your recelver and, conversely, the shorter the merial the greater diffi- cuity you will have in getting dis tance. This matter of sensitivity to get distance and selectivity for cutting through local to get distance s as much a matter of set design as it 18 of merial design. Grid Cireuit Explained. The amount of energy delivered to the grid circult of your detector or radio frequency amplifier tube de- termines the relative audibllity of the signal. A long aerfal will collect a greater amount of energy in your aerfal circuit than a short one will and, therefore, the longer aerigl stands more chance of glving you greater sensitlvity in picking up dis. tant stations because of the fact that C AMPLIFICATION 360 405 WAVELENGTH 455 it will give you a stronger signal with which to work. The signal you get in the grid circuit, however, also de. pends on the amount of energy that is transferred from the aerial circuit to the grid circuit of the detector or radio frequency amplitier, and this transfer of energy is determined by the degree of coupling between the aerial and grid circult and also by the number of turns in the aerial oil, which is coupled with the grid coil The closer the aerial and the coupling between arid coils, the broader the tuning and the greater the trouble you will have in separating Stati The more the number of the greater will be the transfer of energy from awerial coil to grid coil and the broader will be the tuning The reasons why shortening the aerial, decreasing coupling and de creasing the number of turns on the prima coil reduce interference and sharpen up tuning, is shown in the diagram. We will take an arbitrary curve, exaggerated to bring out the points of the diseussion. The horizontal scale indicates the wave length and the vertical scale amplification response of a certain signal We will first consider the effect of the ze of the aerial. Curves A, B and C are the audibility curves ob tained with a certain recelver using a long aerial when tuned to wave lengths 360, 405 and 455 meters, respectively It will be noticed that Today’s Offer to All Who Have Stomach Distress Try One Bottle of Dare’'s Mentha-Pepsin for Indigestion or Any Stomach Trouble and if Not Delighted With the Good Results Peoples Drug Stores or ‘Any Reliable Druggist Will Gladly Return the Purchase Price. Why not get a bottle of this grand stomach medicine today, with the distinct understanding that your money will be promptly returned if does not stop the most acute stomach distress quicker than any- | thing you ever used Your stomach may be so distended with gas that you think every minute vour heart will stop beating, yet with one dessertspoonful of Dare's Mentha-Pepsin that dreadful feeling of suffocation will vanish in a few | others, l | while the response is great, the ourves overlap mo that there is al ways & background of neighboring stations. If the merial {5 cut down in length, curves D, B and I’ are| obtained at the various wave length | adjustments, and while the response i8 not as great, none of them overlap and each setting does not contain a background of some other station This Is the effect produced by de creasing the size of the aerial. Decreasing the amount of coupiing between the merial coll and the grid oil has an effect very similar to| that ehown for m decrease in the size of merial. Decreasing the num ber of turns In the aerfal cofl also has a similar effect. The sum total of the results of decreasing aerial slze, upling and numb of turns in fal cofl? is to increase the selectivity by reducing signal strength and narrowing the wave length band —e RADIO TRADE BANQUET. RADIO DEALERS TO GIVE SETS TO MORE SHUT-INS Receipts From Show Wednesday 2 Afternoon, September 30, to Be | . 1S. (Widor). Donated for Purpose. v Lieut. Col 5 he Land of the| The Radlo Merchants’ Association 2 has decided to assist in giving more shut-ins radio receivers, as they have been forcibly impressed with the fact that hundreds of shut-ins are so | greatly entertained by radio. The hospitals have had their needs filled and friends are daily helping their sick ones, but there are man who lie all day long with no diversity. These need music, lectures, base ball games, church services and all the rest of the things which may be brought to them through the radio. Radio dealers have decided to ap- propriate the receipts derived ut the door of the radio show, Washington Auditorium, Wednesday afternoon, September 30, for this work.
