SWAMPSCOTT, Mass., August 31.— Maybe Senator William M. Butler will decide not to be a candidate to succeed himself and mavbe he will become Secretary of War when the resignation of John W. Weeks fi is acted upon by President Coolidge and maybe David Walsh, Democrat will be elected to the Senate again Mr. Coolidge would not like to see the aforesaid things happen and he | fs by no means convinced that they will happen, but just the same there’s uneasiness in Massachusetts politics and the admini; ion s doing all it can to steer the situation that the least political damage will be in curred. Some of t publican aspirants for Butler's place Think ot They argue that a differ ent type of man must be put up to beat Walsh. For the benefit of those who haven't followed Massachusetts politics be it ®aid that David Walsh is a sort of Al Smith. He gets a tremendous vote from Republican aend Democratic sources end runs ‘way ahead of all other candidates. For example, in 1915, when the ill-fated Wilson appeal for a Democratic Congress caused such widespread losses to the Demo crats, Mr. Walsh was effective enough to beat John W. Weeks, now Secke tary of War, who was then running for the Senafe, to succeed himself. In 1324, when Calvin Coolidge swept the country, and particularly his own State of Massachusetts, by unprece dented majorities. Senator Walsh came within 18,000 of winning out The tale is told that 50,000 ballots, which were known to have come from Democratic woman voters, were left unmarked because the senatorial names were far down the ballot. Strength Conceded. Anyway, even the Republicans con cede that Walsh is a strong opponent end that the result would he close, no matter whom the Republicans named The Liemocrats are confident of vic- tory, decause they t if Senator to winning Coolidge himself was carrying te by 422,000 majority, then it sier when Coolidge is not running and the election is fought out on a normal basis. Mr. Coolldge, of course, will employ every power he can command to help Mr. Butler if he is the nominee, but excessive use of the presidential in- fluence would inevitably be turned by the Democrats to some political ad vantage. Mr. Coolidge has his eves on 1928 and may not be willing to take the risks involved in the Butler candi- dacy. Appointing Mr. Butler to the portfolio of Secretary of War, how- ever, would mean that the latter might have to give up his place as chairman of the Republican naticnal committee. While Will Hays re- mained in the cabinet and kept his place as head of the national com mittee, precedent doesn't permit of | wide activity in politics.
