A superheterodyne recelver is com- plicated only to the extent that more parts and circuits are found in this than in most of the other types of circu When the circui are reduced to units there is nothing vy complicated about the superhete yne, either from the standpoint of understanding the circuit or construct- ing the set. The greater possibility of trouble in a superheterodyne receiver lies in the fact that more parts and wirlng are used in the set and more tubes are required to operate it. In checking up possibilities of trouble in this type of set there are more parts to be checked up and more time is necessarily re- quired to find the source of trouble. Most of the troubles met with in the superheterodyne can be eliminated at the source. Careful inspection of the parts before they are mounted up, tests on the windings of the coils, tests on the condensers, tightening of the screws and binding posts on the rheo- stats, sockets and other apparatus be- fore assembly is the best and surest way of insuring trouble-proof opera- tion later. You may save some time by slap- ping the parts together as they come in the packages, but you will waste more time than you saved when you falling off and constant repair bil OUR —last f many satisfied patients in Washington rounding cities and towns. In most superheterodynes six to eight tubes are used, and if all of them are not on the iob you are not only golng to get poor resuits, but you are going to take the chance of spolling your good tubes. This is espe- cially true of sets in which several tubes are controlled from a single rheostat. You may find, for instance, that you cannot get results unless you turn up the rheostat so as to put more current through the tubes. This will give more current to the partially exhausted tube in the number con trolled by that rheostat, but such an adjustment is giving the other tubes too much current, with the result that in a short time the good tubes will be ready for the scrap heap. Test Tubes Monthly. The tubes of vour superheterodyne set should be tested at least once a month with & good tube tester. Your local dealer will be glad to make the tests for you. You will find it much cheaper to look to your batteries and be sure that the “A” battery especially s always fully charged than to lessen the resistance of the rheostat to in- crease the current through the tubes. When your sup{‘rhelerudyne has been working well for some {ime and thea shows signs of weakening, the the tirst thing you should do is to have the tubes tested. If you find that the tubes are in good “condition then it will be time enough to look to the other apparatu The general use of multltube re- ceivers and superpower broadcasting stations has done much to eliminate the old system of using several jacks in a radio set. The latest receivers are using only one jack at the most, to which the loud speaker can be con- nected. Many of them are eliminating ks and providing binding posts in the rear of the set for/ the loud speaker connections. The elimination of plugs and facks is ridding recelvers of two very com- mon sources of trouble, Any recefver is better off without jacks, for that matter. Wiring greatly simplified, capacity of the wir. ing is reduced, and the front panel is improved in appearance. The use of Jacks where any audio transformer is used with high primary impedance, such as the high quality, low ratio audio transformers that are becoming more and more popular, s hazardous. Of all the babies born in the United States, from 12 to 20 out of every 100 die in the first year of life, and the majority of these deaths take place during the warm months,” according to Assistant Surgeon General W. C. Rucker and Senior Surgeon C. C. Pi of the United States Public Health Service, in a Public Health Report. Bowel Trouble Is Cause “Twenty-five per cent of the deaths of infants under one year of age is due to intestinal diseases,” say these leading authorities on health. The United States Public Health Service asserts that any bowel irregularity occurring in babies or children in summer may be the outward and visible sign of the beginning of a serious illness. Mothers must never consider any disturbance of children’s bowels as unimportant or “only summer complaint.” Give Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin _ Don't gamble with your baby’s health!
