Army Race Planes Tested to Stand 12 Times Normal Stress in Flights Speclfications for planes to be uscd by Army pllots in the Pulitzer race at Mitchel Field next October call for a safety factor equal to 12 times the normal load which the wings or fuse- lage of the machines would be called upon to carry. To save time, the Curtiss Co. at Garden City, which is doing the work, is testing parts when completed and before the racer is assembled. The wing strength is determined by actual deadweight tests, the wing structure being loaded with weights up to 12% times the stress expected to be met under fiight conditions. In addition, the strength of the wing and tail surfaces in inverted flight po- sition Is being calculated in a some- what similar way. Landing gear like wise I8 being tested by suspending the loaded machine a required dis tance above the factory floor and dropping it the impact being greater than the force of any blow the gear is apt to sustain in landing. Thoroughness of the tests has even extended to actual measurement of the force the pilot will be required to exert upon controls. It has been de- termined that with maximum loads on the control surfaces a 37-pound pull on the “stick” will move that surface in » the required direction. 'In actual flight only a fraction of that strength would be required. “In all of the tests the new racers have proven thelr ability to withstand without apparent difficulty the speci- fied load in all cases,” an Air Service announcement sald.
