WIID IS HEARD IN PERU. Ralph Shugart, engineer of the Moose Station, WJJD, Mooseheart, 11l., had a great thrill a'few days ago when a letter was received from L. Anciaux, who lives in Arequipa, Peru, outh America. Senor Anclaux said, among other things, that WJJD c in on his set in South America, miles from Mooseheart, with “extraor- dinary volume, despite static—hard to separate from KDKA.” He said the weather was clear, but the “atmos- pheries” were heavy. Inasmuch as this reception was made on June 23 (Summer broadcasting) and it com- pared in power well to KDKA, which is now shooting with tremend- ous power, Shugart savs, “Why super- power. when the little old 500-watter does that?” RADIO’S BEST OFFERINGS TONIGHT Concert by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Seattle at New Zealand. tadio messages have been received from the battleship Seattle at Welling- ton, New Zealand, by the Bellevue naval radio laboratory here on high frequency low-wave lengths. The Navy Department announced vesterday that a strength of five, or fair, was noted on the messages Sun- day’ sent by high frequency on a 3s- meter wave length, and a strength of four, only slightly less clear, on 54 meters. The Seattle, on the other hand, reported the strength of the Bellevue's set on 71 meters as ‘“very strong,” and on 41 meters as ‘“‘good" at a strength of eight. In radio tabu- lations a strength of seven is good. ‘Bellevue,” the announcement said, “also continued to handle traffic to the MacMillan _expedition on 17 meters during daylight, traffic being in this case sent and acknowledged at 9 a.m. This continuation of daylight commu- nication over a distance of approxi- mately 2,700 miles on short wave is a remarkable step in radio progress, “The transmitting sets used by the nger hour: Ralph Williams and the Little Navy are the development of the Naval Research Laboratory, while all high frequency apparatus, both send ing and receiving, with which the Bowdoin and Peary are equipped, are the product of the Zenith Laboratory of Chicago, of which E. F. McDonald, second in command of the MacMillan expedition, is president. ““The expedition is suppiied with sets capable of transmission on waves ap- proximately of 20, 40, 80 and 180 me- ters. Their efficiency has heen demon strated by their continued ability to maintain communication not merely with the Navy, but with numerous |amateurs throughout the entire coun- try.” NIAGARA BRIDGE BEGUN.
