By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 17.—The cot-| ton market opened firm today at an advance of 13 to 17 points. Failure of over-Sunday weather reports to show anticipated rains in the South- west evidently disappointed some of Saturday’s sellers. This, combined with relatively steady Liverpool | cables, led to considerable covering or eb ing and the market sold up to 3.85 for December after the call, or about 23 to 24 points net higher on active positions. These figures appeared to attract Southern or local selling, however, and there were reactions of several points although prices held fairly steady at the end of the first hour. | Trading was quieter later, but prices worked off several points under a little selling which appeared to be inspired by reports that a Memphis authority estimated the mid-August crop condition at 62.3 and the indi cated yield at 14,058,000 es.
