NEW YORK, July 6.—The tendency of prices on the Stock Exchange today was still upward, with a number of new high records, many individual strong spots and with the volume of business comparing favorably with the average of the preceding week. The features were mostly among high- priced industrials and shares of the utility type, but some of the rails were taken up for a time quite vigorously and several of the motors were very strong. Some of Day's Leaders. Among the high-priced industrials the leaders were Mack Trucks, which made a new high on the usual talk of a capital splitup; American Can, General Railway Signal and Nash Motors, which made a full recovery of last week's loss. The advance kept on in Foundation Company. carrying | the stock into new high ground; also in Cudahy Packing. White Motors, moving with Mack Trucks, was up two points on a large turnover. Ward Baking was in _demand, and so were Montgomery Ward and American Metals. Warren Brothers was up another two points. Without any news from the woolen industry, the American Woolen were bid up briskly, the com- mon crossing 40. Wall Street e: plained this rise as the driving-in of an old short interest rather than as due to anything fresh in_ the in- dustrial situation. Baldwin Locomo- tive and American Locomotive at one time were up over a point apiece. There were new high records in American Ice common and preferred, in Certainteed Products, American | Agricultural preferred, Flelschmann, Studebaker, Hudson and Manhattan, McCrory Stores and Robert Reis pre- ferred. " The talk was that the last- named stock was to be called in.| Studebaker was actively bought on | the reasoning that, having shown strength enough to go through its | former high, the stock was in a new | forward swing | Wabash Rail Feature. Railway shares were not as promi- nent as the industrials, but some of them were actively bought at vari- oOus stages of the day. Missouri-Kan- sas-Texas went up 2 points and the preferred a point. Kansas City Southern had a similar rise. Wabash, above 34, was one of the features. Large transactions occurred in New York Central as it reached 118, where it was up over 4 points from the low of last week. Atchison drew close to 120 again, but the feature among the old line dividend payers was Reading, which, above 88, was up over 2 points. The specialty moves included Cer- tainteed Products, which rose to a new high for the year. Its rise was in further response to the report that the Pacific coast plants of the com- pany were preparing to put on night shifts to take care of orders for ma- terials from Santa Barbara. A number of the rails were being “bulled” today for special reasons. There was said to be a possibility of dividend increases for Baltimore and Ohio, Southern Rallway, St. Louis-San Francisco and Atchison. Northwest. ern rails were favored in connection with the pending Interstate Com- merce Commission decision on the question of increased freight rates. MARKET CLOSES STRONG. Motor and Merchandising Favored in Last Hour. NEW YORK, July 6 (®).—Return of normal monetary conditions and favorable trade news provided the basis for a further advance in prices in today's stock market. Principal activity centered, however, in issues believed to be under pool sponsorship. Total sales approximated 1,050,000 shares. The closing was strong. Steady accumulation of the motor and mer- chandising issues was a sustaining in- fluence in other quarters in the late trading. STUDEBAKER REPORTS W YORK, July 6 (®)—The| Studebaker Corporation had a pros- perous second quarter, profits being estimated in excess of $6,000,000, which would bring the total for the first half of 1925 to $9,600.000, or $4.96 a share on the common stock, against $3.88 in the first half of 19 in the second quarter were against 28152 a yvear ago. Cor- poration issues rather than Govern- ment bonds were the leaders, although the Treasury 4s made a new record high and prices for the Libertys were maintained around the close of last week. Individual issues in demand today, bash 538 among the rails and such industrials as Armour 43s, which made a new high for the year above 90. Activity In this {ssue may have been stimulated by the greater favor shown to the packing houses stocks on the exchange. The Armour 4148, how- ever, are so well secured on valuable real estate that they take a high in { vestment rating. Leader Among Rails. The leader in the speculative rails was Missouri, Kansas, Texas adjust- ments, active and strong after a long peri of quiet. St. Louis-San Fran cisco adjustments and prior lien “A 4s moved up, as did Seaboard Alr Line adjustments. Investment in- quiry kept up for U. S. Rubber 68 at the high of the year. Conviction that the fertilizer in- dustry had improved was reflected by an advance of nearly 3 points in Virginia-Carolina Chemical 74s with warrants Foreign Group Stronger. Foreign bonds as a group did better. At one time all the French obliga. tions were active at Friday's close, D partment of the Seine 78 being rel tively the strongest. Dutch East Indies 68, both the 1947 and the 1962 maturities, sold higher than at any time in a week. Republic of Chile 78 drew close to their best previous Quotation this year. Urguay 8s was another South American bond in demand. Some interest was shown in munic ipals, one of the day's new issues being $1.000,000 Multnomah, Ore., | School District 48 apd 41s to yield from 4.05 to 4.15 per cent. RAILROADS EARN 4.38 PER CENT IN 5 MONTHS Reports Made Today After Study of Returns Filed With Inter- state Commerce Commission. Class oné rafiroads for the first five months of this vear had a net operating Income of $345,880,340, which represented an annual rate of return of 4.38 per cent on invest- | ment.
