BUTTERFLY HOUSE' DEATHS ARE BARED Tetraethyl Lead Poisoning Killed Five Workers in New Jersey Plant. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 22.—Deaths from poison in g lead plant which caused its victims to have hallucina- tions of seeing butterflies ha been revealed in New Je dition to fatalities among worker: who use radium paint on watch d Coincident with inquiries into five deaths and numerous cases of illness in the plant of the United® States ium Corporation, Orange, has developed that tetraethyl poisoning killed eight months and made 300 others seriously ill at the Deepwater, N. J., plant of the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Co. The plant, now closed, made tetra: ethyl lead and treated gasoline with it. “House of Butterflies.” The compound is used in manufac- turing “anti-knock” gasoline, the sale of which has been stopped in several States pending Fed: investigation into effects on pedestrians who breathe motor exhaust g . Public attention was first focused on lead poisoning last Fall when five persons died violently in strait jackets from the effects of making “looney gas™ at the Standard Oil Co.’s Bayway works near Elizabeth, N. J. The Federal inquiry does not cover | the menace to workers in making the | lead compound in the du Pont works, where as many as 200 persons were employed. The du Sonts are sald to have exercised every possible pre- caution to protect their workers, spending $2,000.000 for the plant and $60,000 in improvements. They als sent specialists to care for the sick and paid benefits to dependents. A number of scientists believe that the radium deaths at Orange were caused by mesothorium, a substance used in luminous paint and having radio activity 20 times as intense as that of radium. The employes the plant the of the radium cor- poration who have died or are suf- fering from poisoning are employed in painting watch dials with radium paint. They had been in the habit of drawing brushes between their teeth to point them after applying the paint. CHURCH OBSERVES ToTH ANNIVERSARY Solemn High Mass and His- torical Sermon Holy Trin- ity Feature. Holv Trinity parish of Georgetown cbserved the seventy-fifth anniversary of its present church vesterday with solemn high- mass and a special his- torical sermon. The parish is sacred ground in the history of American Catholicism, Rev. E d L. McDonnell of Col- lege, Baltimore, former pastor, said. It was founded with a chapel in the woods overlooking the Potomac in 1784, the first Catholic Church in the present limits of the District. The first pastor was Rev. Francis Neale, brother of the first president of Georgetown. Historical Holy Trinity always has been in charge of the Society of Jesus. It was in the old chapel that the Jesuit order was officlally reconstituted in the United States, on instruction from the general of the society in White Ru'!h, when it was restored after ng banned by the Catholic Church. ht young men, getown grad- uates, ‘at that time took the vow of the order. Among them was Father Fenwick, later to become Bishop of Boston and the founder of Holy Cross College. Fiom the time of the restoration of the Jesuits, the church has had a plcturesque history. The old struc- ture was abandoned In 1850 and now forms the convent of the Sisters of Mercy. After the battle of Bull Run the new church was transformed into a hospital and served this until the end of the Civil War. Reeve to write and have published “an article on the sin of highway speeding.” This was done, but the court, still feeling that the sentence had not been satisfied, ordered him to write a story on the evils of burglary, robbery, bootlegging and similar offenses.
