Selecting and Caring for Headsets. In spite of the tremendous increase in the use of lond speakers exclu- sively for purposes of listening inand tuning In stations, the headset is still a factor in reception from dis- tant stations and for use when a sin- gle person wishes to listen in. Phones range in price from about $3 to $5. As with any other product the quality of a pair of phones can usually be gauged by the selling price, but there is often a considerable dif- ference between phones of different manufacturers and designs. Before the entry of the unserupulous headset manufacturer the usual method of re- ferring to the quality of phones or of distinguishing the various types was by mentioning the resistance of the winding. The resistance of the wind- ing, of course, was not a measure of its efficlency, because it would be best to use a winding having little or no resistance, but when the proper size of copper wire was used, the resist- ance was an indication of the amount of wire used in the winding and there- fore an indicator of the relative effi- ciency of the phones. A winding of a large number of turns naturally had a higher resistance than a winding of fewer turns so that the higher resist- ance winding was really more efficient in spite of the high resistance. The re sult was that while it was an easy matter to make a headset having a very high resistance, the resistance in that case was not a true indl- cator of the efficiency of the phones but rather a measure of their in- efficiency. Resistance of winding can only be taken as a measure of the efficlency of a headset when the manufacturer is known to be reliable. Determination of the best type of phone to buy from a standpoint of type of armature is more or less a matter of personal choice. The mica diaphragm type is more sensitive and operates with less chance of blasting on strong signals, but its tone is more hollow than that produced by, the metal dlaphragm type of phone. More care must be exercised in handling a mica diaphragm phone than in hadl ing the metal diaphragm type because the mechanism of the former is more delicate than that of the latter. Lengthen Life of Phones. Directions are usually supplied with a pair of phones regarding which lead should be connected with the plate side of the circuit and which lead should be connected with the B bat- tery side of the circuit.
