AIR FLYERS FACE MGUNTAIN HAZARD Return Route Via Los Angeles Lies Between Two Rug- ged Ranges. The sizth and concluding article of Mr. Neely and Capt. Street adventure over the air mail trans- continental route brings them to tie Pacific terminus of the Army Air Service at Nan Diego. BY FREDERICK R. There was a short circuit in the ignition system, which probably developed the day before at Dryden when the starter broke. The me- chanics were draining the gasoline from the tank and a man was up on the motor cleaning it with gaso- line and a wire brush. Either a spark from the brush or gasoline in contact with the short circuit caused an explosion that blew the mechanic from the motor onto the concrete runway, fracturing his nose, cutting his lip and eye and injuring the right leg. The plane burst into flames and the fleld fire department | responded in time to put out the fire and leave something that resembled an_airplane. The plane was built at the San Antonio Air Intérmediate Depot about two years ago, had flown thousands of miles and came home to die. A new De H, rigged up especially strong for training advanced cadets, and much faster than the old boy that had so faithfully served us, was wheeled out for our use and we cut across Texas country at 110 miles an hour, landing in Dallas, 260 miles away, after 2 hours and 20 minutes flying. he airway runs north from Dallas (Continued on Fourth Page. arter broke as the pilot pushed the | filled hour o Rockwell Field, San Diego, Calif., the Pacific terminus of Air Service Transcontinental Airway. morning to continue our journey, we v our right ship on the line wings burned to n with Beautiful Home for Colored Only $300 Cash—Balance Like Rent N.E—Ideal one of our year's best Dbath. handsome improvements equal 1417 Duncan St location: offerings ‘n perfect Aixtures and to homes Dlete, %5, See This Six_rooms. condition ting far more initors CAYWOO0D BROS — & GARRETT inc 915 NEW YORK AVE N W ~ H ARGONNE 16th and Columbia Rd.
