B. de- gree there in 1898, he attended the Southern Baptist Theological Semi nary at Louisville, Ky., from which he graduated in May, 1901. Upon | graduation he accepted the call of the ) Baptist Church at Greensboro, Ga. After three vears he became pastor | of the Capitol Avenue Baptist Church, Atlanta, Ga. The Sunday school and church 'doubled in two other church in adjacent territory. Remaining sb cears in_Atlanta, he became pastor of the Fifth Baptist Church of this city 16 years ago. Something more than persons have joined the church during the present pastorate, 1,270 of whom were baptized by Dr. Briggs. Building New Addition. | Just three weeks ago ground was broken for “The Darlington Memo rial.” which an_ addition to the present Sunday school building. It is expected this new addition will be completed in the early Fall. It will represent an expenditure of $60,000. Much of the time of Dr. Briggs is given to evangelistical and local missionary work. The Fifth Baptist Chapel on Four and One-Half street southwest has been maintained primarily through his untiring efforts. During the past few years successful meetings have been held in Virginia Georgia, North Carolina, South Caro- lird Maryland ande the District of Columbia. Recently part of his time has been given to the organization of Baptist churches at Mount Raini and to Wilson Avenue, Md. At the former service the Litany will be read for the first time from the new Litany desk which has just recently been presented to Epiphany by a member of the vestry as a memorial to his parents. THEOPHIL MENZEL 10 BE ORDAINED Son of Former Pastor of Concordia Church to Enter Ministry. Theophil Menzel will be ordained in Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, Twentleth and G streets northwest, tomorrow. Mr. Menzel is a son of Dr. Paul A. Menzel, who for many years was pastor of Concordia Church and now is executive secre- tary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Evangelical Synod of North America. Mr. Menzel, after attending the public schools in Washington, stud- ied at Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, IIl; Washington University and Eden Theological Seminary, both at St. Louis, Mo., and at the divinity school of Yale University. At the recent annual conference of the Atlantic di: trict of the Evangelical Synod he was recommended for ordination. Because of the renovating of the church auditorfum the service will be held in the chapel, entrance on Twen- tieth street. Dr. Paul A. The dlamond jubilee of Holy Trinity Church will be celebrated with ap- propriate ceremonies at all the masses tomorrow. ‘This jubllee takes into con- sideration only the occupancy of the present edifice, which the parish first used June 21, 1850, the original church being erected near the present site in 1784. The June meeting of the executive board of the Coramunity Bible Readers’ League was held at the league’s headquarters, in the Mills Building, Thursday, with Mrs. Louise H. Earll presiding. Reports were made by the mem- bers and matters of general interest discussed. In the reports it was stated that the incoming pledge cards showed that the following additional representations were made: One resident State, Massachusetts; five birth States, Alabama, Delaware, Towa, Michigan, Wisconsin; three churches, Marvin Methodist Episcopal South, Brightwood Methodist Episco- pal, St. Aloysius, and an unnamed Lutheran church, and five organi tions, the Eagles, Elks, the Woman's Interdenominational Missionary Fed- eration, Young Men's Christian As- soclation and ‘E. P. W.” It was announced that the men are outnumbering the women, thus far, in signing the cards, and that 10 per cent of the signers have been non- church members. A prospectus of plans for the Fall work was presented which included the possible holding of a Bible bee to be conducted after the manner of the old-time ‘“spelling bees,” which have benefited so many of us.
