NEW YORK, June 16.—There was & geries of group movements on the Stock Exchange today with the course of prices upward. Traders were shift- ing from one set of stocks to another. THe railway shares came to the front after the first hour and were stronger than they had been in some tim There were a number of new hizh records in the industrial list and some Zood sized gains were made in spe- cialtiy Traction Shares Strong. Traction securities were promi- nent, the stock moving with the honds. Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit made a new high above 52. Inter- borough Rapid Transit at 26 was up 213 points and there was unusual activity at higher prices in Third Avenue. This demonstration was a belated appreciation of the testimony recently given that the new subways cannot be built without an increased fare or an increased assessment on real estate, to which latter alterna- tive the property owners have al- ready strongly voiced their objec- tions Railroad Issues Wake Up. Railway shares. which had done nothing for the last week or more, had a sharp upward turn. The rise started with the Northwestern rails, probably as a drive against the short Interest. primarily. Secondiy, it was 2 speculation on the possibility of the Interstate Commerce Commission granting the increased rates in the Northwestern States which have been applied for. Higher Freight Rates Seen. The Northwestern rails—Chicago and Northwestern, St. Paul, Northern Pacific and Great Northern—were all favorably affected by advices from | Washington that an increase in frelght rates for these cagriers was | inevitable and was only a question of time. Wall Street has been talking about such a development for some time. But today it appeared that it | was being regarded more seriously. There was continued activity in Na- tional Distillers’ products, accompany- ing reports of favorabie earnings and | steady improvement in all depart-| ments of the company’s business. High-priced Industrials Are Trading Feature. NEW YORK, June 16 ().—An out burst of bullish enthusiasm based on the establishment of a new 1925 car- loadings record for the week ended June 6 featured today's stock market. Practically all other groups rallied in sympathy with special strength being shown by a number of motor, public utility, food and merchandising shares. Total sales approximated 1,000,000 shares. The closing was strong. Buoyancy of the high-priced industrials featured the late trading, Mack Trucks, Gen- eral Electric, Maxwell B certificates and du Pont seling 3 to 6 points above yesterday’s final quotations. in STRONG. Railroads serving Arizona and New Mexico were ordered today by the Interstate Commerce Commission to maintain existing rates of live stock moving to El Paso and Deming, N. S. Liens Are Irregular—To- day’s Offerings. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch (o The Star. NEW YORK, June 16.—Strength and activity in traction obligations was the feature of the day in bonds. Under a sudden outburst of buying, prices for the Interborough, Brogklyn Manhattan Transit, the Third Avenue and the New York Railways bonds and notes were carried briskly: for ward, 4h the case of the Brooklyn Manhattan issue to a record high. The upturn in the Third Avenue ad- justments was all the more notice. able because of the comparatively unfavorable result in recent months. Selling at 43l the Third Avenue bonds were still 7 pofnts below the high of the year. Interborough bonds were much nearer to their previous best quotations than were the Third Avenue issues. The New York Rail- way the most speculative of all these tractions, went along with the rest, crossing 31, against Monday's close of 207 Railroad Bonds Improved. A moderate revival of interest in speculative railroad bonds accom- panied the advance in rallroad stocks. Missouri, Kansas, Texas ad- justments resumed their 0ld place of leadership, and somewhat higher prices were recorded for New Haven, Louls-San Francisco and Sea board bonds. Chicago, Terre Haute and Southeastern incomes main- tained their gains of the day be- fore. More irregularity United States Government issues. The Liberties were generally firm and Treasury 414s were higher, while Treasury 4s sold off. Inthe foreign list, selling of Mexi- can issues, which was a feature on Monday, appeared to have subsided. W YORK, June 16.—The straw- berry market slumped badly today as local dealers turned their attention to other fruits. Hudson Valley berries sold mostly at 15 to 25 cents per quart. Hudson Valley white sweet cherries brought 121, to 15 cents per quart basket and the black varleties 16 to 25. Prices ranged from 10 to 15 cents per quart for red sours. [ Bad Dreams | L - In dreams we're often falling from cliffs a furlong high, or through dark dungeons crawling, to find a place to die; in dreamland we are viewing fierce paths that we must tread, with monsters dire pursuing, and vultures overhead. Oh, fearful nightmare terrors! And when the morning breaks, we find that they were errors, the dizziest of fakes. The classy sun is shining, the world fair and bright, we say, while yet reclining, that everything’s all right. But soon the prospect cheerful is shadowed by some clouds; we think up bogies fearful, and phantom grieis in crowds. Our treasured cook may leave us, just when we need her ‘most; promoters may deceive us, who sell us stock by post; the car may break a fender, the village bank may fail, the goose may not be ten- der, for which we paid our kale. Our aunts may come to see us and stay three months or eight; prosperity may flee us, and want be at the gate. Disasters thick may follow, and spoil our cherished schemes; and all these fears are hollow, as empty as the dreams. We cannot help the visions that come to us by night, the battles and_collisions, the terrors that ai- fright; but in the golden morning they all seem vague and vain; such horrors we are scorning, for we're awake and sane. And in the morn- ing golden we ought to shoo away all thoughts that don’t embolden and fit us for the day.
