2001 BOULEVARD ' THROUGH VIRGINIA Will Run From Memorial Bridge to the Tennessee Border Line. The Lee Highway Association now contemplates a shaded boulevard with a 200-foot right of way through Vir- ginia from the Memorial Bridge over the Potomac to the Tennessee line, passing through the Shenandoah National Park. | This plan was explained yesterday at a meeting of members of the asso- ciation and persons living along the route in the courthouse at Warren- ton, called primarily to impress upon property owners in four counties the advantage of donating land to be held in trust until means are found to finance the boulevard. The course will follow practically the line chosen for the Lee highway through Arlington, Fairfax, Prince Willlam and Fauquier counties, but some minor deviations may be made to follow the line of least resistance in securing land. Similar meetings will be held dur ing the week at Sperryville, New. market, and towns further along the line to explain the project to property owners. Plans Are Rushed. At the same time, the meeting took action urging Virginia to rush to com: pletion during the next vear four un- completed stretches in the Lee high. way route between Washington and the Shenandoah Valley. Work is now in progress on all but one of these but, according to Dr. n, general director of the this will require at le: t the present rate. Th -|the & land. including the historic stretch through the Bull Run battlefield, which now can be reached only by a clay road: between Rappahannock and Washington, Va.; west of Sperry- ville and west of Luray. ‘Wade Massey, Virginia state highway com- missioner, told the association that the State had made unusual efforts to assist the project during the year, especially by constructing the road over the mountain from Newmarket, and that everything possible would be done to close the gaps as funds be- came available. 60-Foot Building Line. Besides the 200-foot right of wayv. to be secured by donations, the boulevard plan contemplates a building line set 60 feet further back, thus affording opportunity for all sorts of landscap- ng. W. S. Hoge, jr., of Falls Church, offered to donate land in Fairfax County through which the present highway passes sufficient to make the 200-foot right of Mrs. Ruby Lee Minar of Washington offered to donate land in Arlington County, pro vided the boulevard is routed through property which she owns. Plans for the actual construction of the boulevard still are nebulous, ex- cept that the Lee highway will be its Dr. Johnson 1 s improbable that Highway Association actually will un- dertake the construction, but simply secure deeds to the land so that there will be no delays over right of way disputes. There is some possibility, it was ex- plain, that the National Government may undertake the project. either in connection with the Memorial Bridge over the Potomac or as an entrance to the Shenandoah National Park. Every step of the country crossed would be rich in Civil War associations and until within the last two cr three vears has been practically closed to automobile tourists because of the road conditions. Federal Powers Large. Col. Clarence O. Sherrill, speaking for the Memorial Bridge Commission, said that the proposed boulevard would form an ideal entrance to the Capital through some of the most beautiful and historic territory in the United States, reaching a climax for tourists from the West with the sight of Wash- ington below the Arlington County hills and the great structure over the Potomac. Col. Sherrill said that the commis- sion had almost unlimited powers for extending the scope of the bridge proj- ect into the surrounding country and intimated that they might be inter- ested at least in landscaping part of the route. The increase in property values which would come with actual work on the boulevard, he said, would more than compensate owners for the loss of the strip of land, to say nothing of the tourist travel which would bring busi- ness to the farming comntunities. He told of the rapid increase in property values alog new highways leading to the great national parks of the West. Route Sparsely Populated. Henry Roberts of Bristol, Va., presi- dent of the Lee Highway Association, said that the land through which it i proposed to extend the boulevard is sparsely populated, and considerable stretches of it are in brushland and pasture, which bring almost no return to the owners. He said that it would be excelient business foresight to deed over the right of way, which would increase the value of the farms in a | few years more than the natural in- crease in land values could be expect- ed to bring them up in a generation. Mr. Roberts pictured the entire route as lined with great country es- tates when the boulevard is completed, instead of the small farms and nonde- script houses which now cover parts of it. Mrs. Ruby Lee Minar told the asso- ciation that conditions in. Arlington County made it imperative that a definite route be selected for the boule- vard at once and land secured. Further along the route, she said, it is likely that there will not be any great increase in property values, but in the section adjacent to Washington land is going up tenfold since Presi- dent Coolidge signed the Memorial Bridge bill. George A. Ricker, former highway commissioner of New York State. said that Virginia had not yet tasted the value of tourist traffic, which would be certain to come with good roads. No reason has yet been officially an- nounced for Stekloff's removal. but it is stated he has been “living beyond the Communist scale of existence and violating party discipline.” These are believed to be the principal causes of his dismissal. Not only has the once powerful political figure been removed from his important post as editor of Izvestia, but he no longer remains a member of the central executive com- mittee of the Soviet, under whose au thority Iavestia is published. It is even stated that Stekloff's expulsion from the Communist party was seri- ously considered, but this will not be done_if he conducts himself to the satisfaction of the Communist au- thorities during a period of probation An Automatic Nursemaid.
