18 REAL FOR FOREST STUDY Ex-Governor to Preside Over ‘ Committee Arranging Na- tional Celebration. BY ROBERT T. SMALL, The man who wouldn't be Vice President of the United States has gome to Washington at last. Neither would he be Secretary of the Nav. &ince a trick of fate cheated him out f what appeared to be certain nomi ation and election to the presidency 920 he has been the great decliner. dent Harding wanted him in his net, but he shook his head. The Republican national convention at Cleveland last year would not believe there lived a man who would turn down the nomination for Vice Presi- dent. The delegates named Frank O. Lowden of Illinois. He gave them the shock of their lives. He not only declined, but he declined in a manner Which left no room for doubt By that declination Charles Gates Dawes got his great opportunity not only to preside over the Senate, but to tell that august body exactly what he thought of it—and why. Ex-Gov. Lowden likes to pleture himself as a contented old farmer, and ft is in that role that he has come ESTATE. THE EVENING He does not|the planting of 500,000 Northern pine know all names, as does Gifford Pinchot, the forester-governor of Pennsylvania. But the governor is & tree enthusiast, and he belleves that trees should be grown like any other staple crop. It is neither fair nor wise to wait for nature to do all the work. Gov. Low- | den has proved that trecs do grow upon the farm once they are planted. Owns Model Farm. In the midst of a busy life, which led him through a seif-earned educa- tion at college, which took him from the country school to the law office, to Congress and to the governot's mansion at Springfleld, where Lincoln lies, Frank Lowden always has found time to take something more than an academic interest in his fellow man and to give concrete expression to an inborn love for animals and all the creatures of the great out-of-doors, whether furred ot feathered or just merely barked. In the beautiful Rock River Valley of Illinols Gov. Lowden has one of the finest farms in all the country. It s a model establishment and more than once it has lured ite owner away frem the toil and trouble of politics. There was the lure of the White House for a time, but no position in the cabinet, no presiding chair in the Senate has been able to tempt him in recent years away from the eoll and the birds and the animals and the trees. They are his life. He has been willing to serve the public and the country by taking up the duties of chairman of the Forest week com- mittee, for he believes in the forests and the trees and the other works of nature and is desirous that the need of trees and forests shall be borne in upon the public. Planted 500,000 Trees. the trees by their frst|irees on it. Pine trees are a somewhat unusual erop on a Midwest farm, but all who look upon those trees today would feel the owner's pride in them and understand his Interest in forestry. The Lowden trees have grown to an almost uniform height of 25 feat, end are clean, straight and dense. They have become a legally protected game preserve under the laws of Illinois. As he gazed down Pennsylvania avenue today toward the stately dome of the Capitol, a broad grin came to Frank Lowden. Perhaps he was thinking of Charlic Dawes. Perhaps he was thinking of Sinnissippi But in any event he was happy, and he was certain he had got the better of that argument at Cleveland last June. - BOLLING FIELD FLYER BREAKS SPEED MARK Capt. Battery Park and Edgemoor Are Also Included in Improved Mail Program. The city postal facillties will soon be extended to residents of Bethesda, Md.; Battery Park, Edgemoor and the surrounding territory after an extensive fight for this service on the part of the residents of these com- munities. This service will also in- clude in the near future a new sub- station of the. Washington post office at Bethesda. Will Serve Edgemoor. It is expected that regular city mall deliveries will begin in the section some time before July 1. The plan, as now outlined, 1s to have the new office bear the title of the Bethesda (Md,) substatlon, thereby preserving Bethésda as a separate community, but giving regular city deliveries to it and the Kdgemoor-Battery Park development. Hitherto vesidents of the entire have been required either to call at the Bethesda post office for their mail or to rely on rural routes, the latter making deliveries only onceé a day. The rural route also has necessitated the keeping of mail boxes on the streets, marring something of the beauty of the at- tractive suburbs. ich are now being made and which, it is believed, the department will adopt, contemplate the contihuation of the rural service for localities which cannot be reached by city carrlers. For the immediate Battery Park-Bethesda district mail Wil be distributed twice daily. Motor trucks will carry the Bethesda mail from the downtown Washington office and the outlylng Wisconsin avenue ection will recelve service on a par with that of the closer city districts. Residents of Edgemoor and Battery Park have been attempting for some time 1o obtain better on the theory that the city has now grown to and bevond them, that their | development 18 now established and that it should share in all city rivileges. May Change Street Nanes. When the contemplated arrange- ment goes into effect it will necessi- tate changing the names of two streets in Pattery conflict with streets in the eity proper. The street leading from Battery lane postal service | @ Branch |8 Park because of | to the Old Georgetown road, formerly called Michigan avenue, will be known also as Battery lane, being a con- tinuation of Battery lané as that street now exists. This will make Battery lane e longer and more im- portant thoroughfare. The street leading from Glenbrook road to the Old Georgetown road, which has been called Ridge roed, will be changed, after the new office is esteblished, to Maple Ridge road, because of the bordering line of sugar maples. e G.
