NURSE CONFESSES . POISONING THREE French Police Narrowly Avert Lynching of Woman Held for Six Deaths. AMUSEMENTS Belasco—"The Gorilla." The biologist’s concept of the world's ancestor is somewhat weak on the so- clal graces, as “The Gorilla,” the three-act comedy that had its premiere at the Belasco Theater last night, re- veals. The world's grandpa pays a visit to the home of his descendants on Long Island and creates more havoc in two hours than the most violent mother- in-law could have created in two cen- turies. “The Gorilla” is a comedy mystery. It isn’t so much of a mystery, but rates very well as comedy, which is just the intention of Ralph Spence, who authored it. The mystery is not solved, of course, until the final act, but one is excused any polite guess as to its solution during any part of the performance. The unwritten law af the theater requires that each one do his own guessing, so the solution will not be revealed here. Cyrus Stevens, apparently rich un- cle of an undoubtedly pretty ward, has received a letter from “the goril- la,” a super criminal, who .has just escaped from Sing Sing, that makes Mr. Stevens a bit unhappy. ‘“The gorill s keeps his word, informs that he will call at midnight. ns, who hates to he “the gorill next contribu- tion to the homicide statistics, calls in a couple of detectives. Mr. Spence has made his expose of the mystery drama humorous. The de- tective pair, Mulligan and Garrity, bungle every clue provided them by Simmons, the blase young reporter, who in the language of the moderns “cracks extraordinary wise” all dur- ing the performance. Jeff, the negro servant, adds to the levity of the eve- ning, by being lonesome for Alabama, when the gunplay and screaming is at ght. nk McCormack, as Garrity, Bet- ty Weston as the neice and the only girl in the play, and Robert Strange as the girl’s fiance, handle their parts with finesse, as do the other members many laughs are to be had sco this week.
