14 o STOCKPRICES RALLY IN'BRIEF SESSION Sharp Advances in Motors Feature Trading on Ex- change Today. By the Associated Press, > NEW YORK, April 4—Stock prices railled briskly today under the leader- ship of the motor shares, ignoring a further unscttlement in the grain market. Buying of the motors was in further reflection of the sale of Dodge Bros. to a powerful banking group, which has heen construed as an indication of Wall Strect’s faith in the motor industry and reports that Spring eales of cars were running at high levels. Nash Motors soared 14 points to a record top at 2171, and Maxwell Motors A and B touched new peak prices at 91% and 608, up 2% and 4%, respectively. Bosch Magneto, Pierce Arrow preferred and Jordan also moved up 2 to 3 points. Delaware and Hudson jumped 6% points on the announcement of the pro- poscd segregation of its anthracite prop- erties. Good exhibitions of group strength also were given by public utili- ties, steels. oils and equipments, with California Petroleum preferred, United States Cast Iron Pipe, Radio Corpora- tion, United Railways Investment and Steel preferred as poi of out- standing strength The closing was strong. proximated 450,000 shares. D. & H. STOCKS JUMP. Sales ap- est Prices of Session Made Just at Close. BY STUART P. WEST. 1 Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, April 4—Under the Yead of the motor stocks, today's market was strong, making its best prices at the close. Oil shares were up a half point to a polnt and there was quite a bit of covering in the steels. The big jump in Delaware and Hudson was associated, with gossip =bout a segregatlon of its coal prop- ertics. Bp Naxh Keeps Up Rise. The spectacular rise continued Nash Motors, but without any ex planation bevond the familiar talk of a capital split-up. Pierce Arrow preferred was actively bought, cross ing 50, where it points higher. Maxwell Motors £ot to 90 for the first time, and the “B" stock was equally strong. Private estimates are that carnings are running at a! rate sufficient to cover the full $8 to which the “A” shares are entitled and to work out $15 on the “B.” Strength of California Pete prefer- red was a reminder that this stock is retirable at 120, Other oil shares were fractionally higher for the most part, among them Marland, Phillps and Sinclair. Specialties Also Strong. Buying was actively resumed in a number of industrial _specialties. Among these were Radio Corporation, the Mallison issues, Loft, Inc.; In- dustrial Alcohol, Hudson and Manhat- 1an, Bush Terminal, Allied Chemical | and Vivado. Delaware and Hudson was the feature of the rails, with a jump of 3 points. A further recov- ery occurred in Union Pacific in Markets at a Glance New York—Stocks strong; Maxwell {ssues at record high. There was 10 times more beef and 15 times more pork than mutton and lamb eaten in this country last year. ¥ The department estimated that mutton and lamb consumption was at the rate of 5.2 pounds per person; pork, 8.8 pounds; beef, 68.6 pounds, and veal, 8.3 pounds. 17 36% 819% 66 125 41 97 30% 146 17% 13% 120% 86% 123 36 8 4% 21 62% 16% 39% 94 11% 8% 88% 98 67% 1% 26% 61 s T 24 13 86% 119% 48 18% 86 119% 118% 48 46% 118% 46% RATES ON BAR SILVER. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, April 4—The firm- ness which became so pronounced on Friday was again evident in bond trading today. Untted States Govern- ment loans added to their gains of the day before, the fourth 41s mak- ing a new high for the year to date. There was also today unusual activity at advancing prices in the tax-exempt 3lzs. Tractions Are Active. In speculative bonds the tractions were prominent, especially Chicago Railways 6s, Brooklyn and Manhattan 6s and the Interborough bonds gen- erally. The Chicago Railways issues rallled a trifle from the low of Fri- day which followed selling induced by unfavorable reports as to the po- litical situation in Chicago. The Brooklyn Manhattan Transit bonds were very firm, but there was some further selling of Interborough obligations, notably the 7 per cent notes. Third Avenue adjustments and refunding 4s iwere higher. In the railroad group, Seaboard Air ILine bonds were again in demand, with fractional advances in the refunding 4s and the consolidated 6s. A new high was touched by South Porto Rico 7s. Foreign Bonds Stea Foreign bonds were steady, the ner- vousness which was apparent in the French list on Friday subsiding. De- partment of the Seins 7s rallled a half point, and French government s were a shade higher. French rail- issues had a slightly better mar- ket. French Cltles 63 were still heavy. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, April 4—It letter week for havoc values. Apparent virtual ending of the drought which has threatened the safety of the Winter wheat crop all the way from Nebraska to Texas, inclusive, was largely responsible. Compared with a week ago, the wheat market this morning showed price setbacks varying from 8% to| 193, cents a bushel, with corn 10% to 17 down, oats 6% to 7} off and provisions at 35 to 65 deciine. Shortage Talk Vanishes. The extraordinary amount of urgent selling which was witnessed in all the grain pits and the big consequent breaks in price wers regarded in some quarters as the natural sequel to the widespread speculative buying that a few weeks back holsted wheat to above $2 a bushel. It was point- ed out in this connection that the practical ending of the drought left hardly the slightest prospect in sight for a world scarcity of breadstuffs, the seeming likelihood of which had been the chief basis for previous un- usual demand. Large Supplies in Europe. Rapld accumulation of wheat in Europe, coupled with the fact that the United States’ visible supply was only being reduced about half as fast as any traders had looked for, did much also to hurry sellers into ac- tion. Meanwhile indefinite reports were circulated that financial trouble was to some degree a factor in the European continental . grain trade. These reports were afterward denied, but the denials failed to get any- thing like the notice which the orig- inal reports had received. Relativ 1y little heed, too, was paid to asser- tions that the rains came too late for much of the crop in Kansas and were otherwise inadequate. Corn and Oats Fall. With the buoyancy gone from wheat, the corn market and oats were unable to withstand the pres- sure of large immediate supplies Provisions responded to the fall of grain and almost ignored a material rise in the value of hogs. TODAY'S GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, April 4—All grain took a decided upward swing in price to- day after a wavering start. Wheat led the way, with commission houses buying, and with previous specul tive sellers scrambling to collect profits. There was noticeable ab- sence of further offerings on the part of the distressed holders, and the fact that today's Liverpool quotations fail- ed to reflect fully the break in prices vesterday on this side of the Atlantic had a tonic effect here. Chicago opening figures, unchanged to 1 cent lower, May 1.37% to 1.38% and July 1.2815 to 1.20, were followed by an irregular rapid rise that sent May to 1.40%. B Corn and oats received their cue from the action of wheat. Afteropen- ing at 113 lower to 1 point higher, May 913 to 92%, corn ascended to 963, May. Oats started unchanged to 1% up, May Later the gains con- tinued and became general. Provisions were firmer, sympathiz- ing with grain despite weakness in the hog market. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 4—The cotton market opened steady today at a de- oline of 7 to 17 points under over- night selling orders. Considerable trade buying and covering was not sufficlent to absorb early offerings and the market was weak and unset- tled, July soon selling off to 24.35 and Ootober to 24.01, or 11 to 19 points net lower on active positions. The market evidently was influ- enced by relatively easy Liverpool cables and reports of continued poor demand for cotton goods. There also was some Southern selling and local and Wall Street pressure. Covering for over the week end was promoted by the outlook for clear weather in the Southwest over Sunday, however, and the market rallled toward the end of the first hour.
