Living Costs Higher,Says Babson, Urging Greater Care in Buying Specially Good Times to Purchase Every Article, Economist Asserts—More Even Trade Needed. BY ROGER W. BABSON. ¢ Special Dispateh to The Star. BABSON PARK, Fla, March, 28— Prices have again turned upward. Various commodity indices and.:the cost of living figures show that the average Is rising. The question arises as to the effect of this tendency on_general tusiness. . The first effect of rising prices is a stimulant to business. When things start to go up, the people, who have been waiting, buy, Manufacturers also steck up with materials. As the movement continues, however, the same tendency becomes a brake on b When prices get abave the level that- most people “consider fair value) they stop buying‘alto- gether. As a matter.of fact, the aver- age buyer goes at the thing In hap- average for all articles, is higher than ever. ‘ Such a sensible policy on the part of the buyers would do much to cut down the dangerous peaks of over expansion and fiil in the valleys of depressjon. Moreover, these erratic conditions must be eliminated if we are to have business really healthy, happy and prosperous. Nearly every week I have referred to the Babson chart as the best index of business conditions when oconsid- ering all sections of the country and all lines of business. We, as read- ers, will remember that the Babson chart was 6 per cent above normal in the Spring of 1923 and was § per cent below mormal in year. - During 1924 it haa yaried from 9 per cent below normal to 8 per cent above normal and today stands at the Fall of that|— THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. PARIS, March 28.—The Chamber of Deputies yesterday voted govern- ment credits for the month of April anjounting to 3,063,456,261 francs. The voting of the credits was made neces- sury owing to the fact that it would be Impossibfe for the Senate to enact its budget bill before the end of the present month. There waus included in the credit bill an appropriation of 150,000 francs as first relief for the familles of miners killed or injured in the Merle bach mine disaster in Lorraine, Pre mier Herrlot, who introduced the clause appropriating the money, re- quested the chamber to postpone any discussion of criticism of it until the ministers of labor and of public works, who are at the scene of the disaster, have returned and made their reports to Parlidment. a . zgrner C., SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1925. Letters are continually coming to me asking it it is not_ possible to ellminate these erratic changes. Some of these letters blame the changes on to the bankers and others on to the manufacturers. More Even Buying Urged. It 1s wrong, however, to blame either of these groups. No banker enjoys turning down a borrewer, and no manufacturer purposely closes p-|down his mill, thus throwing people out of employment. This is done be- e we and our familles quit buys The peaks and valleys of the son chart are due to the erratic ng habits of the Amerlcan people. | Hence, 1 appeal to buyers to change their present policy of buy- s everything in sight one year and \en instituting great economy the next. Try to both spend and save a reasonable amount of money every vear, seeking out those things wh e the best purchases for the time being. This would lay the founda- tion for @ real period of prosperity from which every one would ulti- mately benefit ) hazard fashion. Special Study Needed.
