M Neill & Libby: Chicago o McLEOD, HURT IN PLANE CRASH, i HAS GOOD CHANCE TO RECOVER Craft With Michigan Rep- resentative Aboard Wrecked Starting. Shoulder and Several Ribs Broken—Army Pilot Escapes Injury. By the Assoclated Press. UNIONTOWN, Pa., March 27.—Rep- resentative Clarence J. McLeod of Michigan has “more than an even chance” to recover from injuries suf- fered last night {n an airplane acel-) dent near here, it was said this morn- ing at the Uniontown Hospital. Mr. McLeod suffered a fracture of the left shoulder, several broken ribs and severe cuts and brulses. Because of his dazed condition an X-ray exami- nation was . ordered to determine Whether Mr. McLeod's spinal column had been injured. Physicians indi- cated that should the X-ray examina- tion disclose such an injury it was not expected to be of a serlous nature. Representative McLeod was en route to Washington from Selfridge Field, Mich, in an airplane piloted by Lieut. R. J. Mintz. S. J. Peps, secretary for Representative McLeod, and Lieut. C. K. Rlch accompanied them in another airplane. Trouble was experienced with the gasoline feed in one of the planes near Uniontown, and a landing was made to repair the difficulty. In tak- ing off the machine piloted by Lieut. Mintz, with Representative McLeod in the cockpit, failed to clear the ground quickly, and the landing gear became entangled in a tree. The air- plane worked itself loose and somer- saulted down the grade, settling against a bank. Lieut. Rich turned the other ma- chine around and landed, he and Mr. Pepz extricating Representative Mc- Leod and Lieut. Mintz from the wreckage. Lieut. Mintz escaped with REPRESENTATIVE C. J. McLEOD. but minor injuries, but Representa- tive McLeod was taken to the Unlon- town Hospital in a semi-consclous condition. No report on the accident at Union- town, Pa., had been received by the Army Air Service here today, nor were any details known. It was said that Representative McLeod had re- ceived authorization from the adju- tant general of the Army to make a flight from Selfridge Field, Mount Clemens, Mich, to Washington by Army airplane.
