Mrs. John Gordon Battelle of Co- lumbus, Ohio, a member of the Re- publican national committee and long active in politics, died of heart dis ease in the Willard Hotel Jast night Mrs. Battelle had been ill since her arrival in this city Tuesday The body was sent to Columbus to- day, accompanied by her brother-in- law, Bishop John W. Hamilton, chan cellor emeritus of American Unive sity; a sister-in-law, Miss Frances Battelle of this city, and a niece, Mrs. Wilbur Quincy, all 'of whom were at the bedside when Mrs. Battelle died Funeral services will be conducted in Columbus tomorrow. Mrs. Battello had for many years been active in Republican polities in Cleveland, and was a delegate at large to the Cleveland convention She was president of the Woman's Republican Club of Ohfo and one of the founders of the Natlonal Women's Republican Club of New York. She was a close friend of the late Mrs. Harding, and often visited her during the time in which she was in the White House. Mrs. Battelle was born in Birming- m. Ala.; was educated in St. Mary's iscopal School in Memphis, Tenn., and was married to the late Col. Bat- telle in 1881, Her only child, Gordon Battelle, died in 1923 AIDED HARDING IN 1920. hi COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 23.—Annie Maud Norton Battelle, widow of Col John Gordon Battelle, Columbus cap- italist, became a figure in Republican State polities and tified with the national affairs of t party after the death of her husband in 1918 Col. Battelle, aithough he would never consent to run for office, al- ways had taken a strong interest in the activities of the Republican Party. He was a warm, personal triend of President McKinley and as early 1916 predicted that some day his friend Warren G. Harding would sit in the White House. At his death Mrs. Battelle resolved to “carry on” for him, particularly in support of Mr. Harding. She was the first contributor to the Harding cam- paign fund and worked actively in behalf of the candidacy of the Ohioan at the Chicago convention. At that time she was vice c! rman of the woman's bureau in Harding head- quarters. During the campalgn that followed, Mrs. Battelle was appointed vice chairman of the Republican national ways and means committee for Ghio, chairman of the woman's bureau of Ohio and a member of the Ohlo Re- publican State campaign committee In the Fall of 1922 she was vice chairman of the Ohio Republican State executive and campaign com- mittees and in February, 1923, she was _appointed associate member of the Republican national committee.
