Educator to Speak om, Don't Be Afrald of Lightni Hardened veterans of one or two Summers of radio listening-in no longer worry about the possible dis- astrous effects of lightning, as far as their radio apparatus and the ercc- { tion of an outdoor antenna are con- cerned. They have weathered their first slege, come through without a scar, and are no longer apprehensive when a bolt of lightning flashes tarough the sky and a peal of thunder crackles around their neighborhood in the first electrical demonstration their aerial installations. Much has been said and much more has been written regarding the chance of lightning striking an aerial in- stallation, but the fact still remains that in no case where lightning struck a building could the blame be traced to an aerial installation. Contrary to the general impression which has prevailed gince the begin- ning of broadcasting, an aerial does | not give a “come-hither” look to a bolt of lightning. Not Particular Where It Strikes. Lightning plays no favorites, and it would just as soon strike a metal gutter, metal clothesline, a tin roof or a metal fire-escape as it would an aerial . Fire underwriters, working under the rule that if a lightning arrester and extreme precaution will not do an installation any good, they ,will certalnly do it no harm, prefer to be very conservative, and they lay down rules which must be followed regard- ing so-called lightning protection of an aerial Installation.
