Col.- William P. Van Ness, 79 years old, U. S. A., retired, died at Walter Reed Hospital Monday, after a long illness. Funeral services are at St. Margaref's Episcopal Church this afternoon. Interment will be in the family plot in Green- wood Cemetery, New York City. Col. Van Ness was born December 18, 1845, the son of the late Lieut Col. Eugene Van Ness, U. S, A., who died during the Civil War, after| many vears’ service,’ including the Seminole Indian and Mexican Wars. He entered the military servica Sep- tember 20, 1867, and was retired for | disability ‘incurred in line of duty| February 2, 1901, his entire service being with ‘the 1st Regiment of Ar- tillery. Col. Van Ness was a member of en old New York family. His great- grandfather, Peter Van Ness, wad an officer of Colonial forces at the siege of Quebec and later commanded a regiment of New York troops in the Revolutionary War. His grand- father, William P. Van Ness, was United States judge for the southern district of New York. Col. Van Ness was also a grandnephew of Gen. John P. Van Ness, an early mayor of the City of Washington, and the com- mander of the District of Columbia Militia in the War of 1812, and also of Cornelius P.
