® . GAST iRON PIPE SOARS STILL HIGHER Features Wild Market Specialty Shares—Some ¢ Weak Spots Noted. in BY STUART P. WEST. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 11.—The atock market today was a very fixed affafr, with rather wide fluctuations among highly speculative specialties and? reactionary tendencies among certain standard issues, notably the independent steels. Tuesday’s spectacular jump in Cast Iron Pipe, which rose to still higher levels today, and the overnight sto- ries: about W. C. Durant, who has been credited with having made huge profits in the stock, effectively adver- tised several other issues with which he has been commonly identified. As a consequence there was heavy: trad- ing at higher prices in such stocks at Independent Oil and Gas, Worth- ington Pump, Savage Arms and Radio Corporation. The buying in this group attracted the greatest attention, while the oil shares re-established their leadership as the session went an. Studebaker More Active. A flood of gossip was let loose about Studebaker and the powerful buying behind it. But this was highly speculative talk. There was nothing new in the situation of the company to account for the advance to 46; it was simply a case of a stock which had done little for sev- aral ‘days coming into the foreground again. Heavy profit-taking continued in General Motors around 78, but other motar stocks were strong. The Max- well issues were in demand and Pierce Arrow preferred ran up to 51. There was unusual activity in Pack- ard Motor from 15% to 16. The movement extended to some of the motor parts stocks, notably Stewart ‘Warner. Bethlehem Steel Weak. The weakness in Bethlehem Steel d1d not come as any surprise to thos who have maintained that the situa- tion in the steel trade was“much more uncertain than it was made out to be a month and a half ago. Bethlehem earned only $2.56 a share last year. It improved considerably in the fourth quarter and showed a strong financial position, with a ratio of current as- sets to liabilities of 51 to 1. But it s a question whether Bethlehem's earning power has grown up, or_is likely to in the near future, to the big increase in capitalization necessitated by the taking over of the Lackawanna Stel, the Midvale and the Cambria. Specialties in Big Moves. 1t was a field day for industrial specialties. United States Cast Iron Pipe at 250 was the most striking spectacle. Universal Pipe and Radi- ator, on account of the similarity of business, was bid up close to 51, but later on vielded sharply under profit- taking. Foundation Co. made a high following the increase in the divi- dend from a $6 to an $8 basis. Some of the same following in Cast Iron Pipe were seemingly back of the rise in Worthington Pump. Savage Arms, Allied Chemical, Air Reduction and Sears Roebuck were other stocks of the specialty class which were bid up more or less violently. North American Strong. With selling orders withdrawn from the market in North American than stock went forward easily. Reports of a decisive change for the better in American Sumatra’s affairs were re- sponsible for the sudden jump in the preferred stock and for the rise in the common above 20; No pretense could be made about to- day’s market that it was in any but a highly speculative stage. Stocks, in the eyes of real buyers, do not sud- deniy become worth 5 to 10 points more overnight, and the upbuilding of shares of the specialty class—the type where it is always hard to judge real values—was more reckless than on any day in several weeks. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK: Stocks—Irregular; Cast Iron Pipe soars 14% points, then breaks 16. Bonds—Unsettled; oils lower on profit taking. Efforts of coke producers to get ovens out of commission have not been speedy enough to allow stabilization of prices. KANSAS CITY, February 11.—The action of the wheat market has put a check on demand for flour from millers in this section. Millers do not look for any great increase in flour buying unless the wieat market rises violent- 1y again or becomes stabilized at present levels. ST. LOUIS, February 11.—Wheat re- ceipts here for January totaled 3,343200 bushels as compared with 1,850,357 a year ago, and shipments were 2,926,980 bushels, compared with 1.512,230. CHICAGO, February 11.—There is too much meat of all kinds on the market, the packers report. Beef trade is reported draggy under con- tinued accumulations so that the price has dropped somewhat. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, February 11.— Con- tinued firmness characterized the bond market today, but actlvity was confined to’a comparatively few is- sues. The Liberties were steady and Atchison general 4s and U. S. Steel sinking fund 6s fractionally higher among the high-grade investment group. Attention was attracted by the strength in Delaware and Hudson convertible 5s, above 107, at a new high not only for this year but for 1924 as well. This bond is now selling, not on ts merits as an investment, but on its conversion privilege into Dela- ware and Hudson stock, the conver- sion price for the stock being 150. Baltimore and Ohio Liens Strong. In sccond-grade railwdy bonds Bal- timore and Ohlo convertible 43;s and Kansas City Southern refunding b were in demand. The Baltimore and Ohio issue is of medium term and at the market yields more than 5% per cent, and the Kansas City South- ern isspe, of long term, ylelds a little less. Chicago Railways 6s were the lead- ers among the tractions with an ad- vance at one time amounting to over 235 points. Dealings were on a large scale. Selling at 86 they were at a new high for the year, but still three points below the high of the preced- ing year. New York City Traction except for the New York Railways securities, failed to make much prog- ress. Consumers Power bs were higher among investment utilities, United States Rubber bs held around their recent best price and the bonds of the sugar producing companies were still firm. Polish Loan Delayed. The feature in the foreign list was the raily in_Austrian 7s, carrying them up above 95. Selling in this issue recently was due to discouraging cable dis- patches as to the economic situation in Austria. The new Polish loan has been post- poned a few days, but is expected very soon. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, February TIl.—The cotton market opened steady today at am advance of 8 to 15 points on relatively firm Liverpool cables, re- norts of an advance in Egyptian cot- ton, continued dry weather in Texas and reports that trade estimates of the East Indian crop were being further reduced Considerable realizing and a little Southern selling was readily absorb- ed by trade and commission house buving, prices advancing to 24.80 for May and 25.06 for July by the end of the first hour, or about 16 to 20 points net higher. New Orleans Quotations. NEW ORLEANS, February 11.—The cotton market opened firmer owing to much better cables than due, and first trades showed gains of 11 to 13 points. Active buving set in after the opening czll on a bullish construction placed on the weekly weather report; that dry weather had prevented plow- ing in" much of central and west Texas. The weather map showed dry weather over the greater part of the belt with no rain in the western section. March traded up to 24.48, May 24.80 and October 24.63, or 22 to 24 points above the previous close.| July crossed the 25-cent line to 25.04. . GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
