A smattering of the white man's civilization along the trails and in the towns, but a few miles away the barbarism and savagery of 2,000 years ago was the Iimpression of Africa gained by a trip of 7,000 miles through the continent from north to south, Felix Shay told members of the National Geographic Society last night in a lecture at the New Ma- sonio Temple. Mrs. Shay, who ac- companied her husband on the trip, which is twice as great as the dis- tance from New ¥ to California, told of her Impressions, saying that she even got used to sleeping in open rest houses “with lions telling the bedtime stories a few hundred yards away.” Mr. and Mrs. Shay made the Cairo to Cape Town journey in the Sum- mer and rainy season, the most diff cult time for travel in Africa. They found a temperature of 115 degrees in Khartum, but more temperate con- ditions in the highlands of the in- terlor. Near the region of the Great Lakes officials tried to persuade the trav- elers to turn back because the Masai were on the warpath; but, with the help of a lion hunter, they got through. One of the most potent causes of trouble in Central Africa, Mr. Shay declared, is the Masai wom- en, who will not have anything to do with the young men until they have “bloodied their spears,” an atti- tude that makes fighting popular. Chere is little beauty of form feature in Africa, according to Shay. 1In form, at least, he said the women of the Congo were an exception.
