C., SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 1925. BONDS CLOSE WEEK | Coxxev vor BONDS srocksxcuancr] AT STRONG PRICES Rails and Industrials Are Leaders—New Offerings Reach Big Total. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The St NEW YORK, January 31.—The speculative rails and Industrials were the leaders in the bond trading at the close of the week. International Great Northern ad- justments, leaders of the speculative rails, ran up three-eighths of a point to 76 in the first half hour today, a gain for the week of over 3 and a balf points. The gains in the Hud- son and Manhattan {ssues were not as rapid but both the adjustments and re- funding bonds were in vigorous demand. Another speculative favorite, M. K. & T. adjustments, made another new high today, more than 5 points up on the week. Rail Issues Improve. Missouri Pacific issues have all done better this week, the 58 of 1965 being up nearly 3 points. This is an in- stance primarily of investment rather than speculative accumulation. Mis- sourl Pacific's recovery in earnings has been one of the notable features of the raflroad year and the pre- ferred stock has been a speculative favorite, but the bonds until recently have been comparatively neglected. Chicago and Eastern Illinols 85 crossed 77 today for the first on this movement. Forelgn Group Stroms. In the forelgn group selected issues were strong, but the general average was little changed. Some of the French raflway issues recovered to- day on the announcement that a new offering was scheduled for next week. This seemed to indicgte that the bankers believe the market is again favorably disposed toward French bonds. French $s were fractionally higher today, but the 7s and the Tis were inclined to heaviness. Week's New Offerings. Taking both speculative and invest- ment {ssues the average for the entire domestic bond list stands today at the high, not only of 1925, but above the best price of 1924, and of any previ- ous vear back to and Including 1819 New offerings this week have been heavy, the total being over $120,000,- 000, against $117,000,000 in the previ- ous week. The largest individual is- sue was 325,000,000 Bell Telephone of Canada 5. NEW YORK BANKS REPORT BIG YEAR Earnings From 10 to 109 Per Cent, With Many Incomes Double Figures of Last Year. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 31—The 1924 was one of the most profitabl in the history of the large New York banks. Earnings on capital of 31 in- stitutions ranged from 10 to 109 per cent, with income in some cases more than double that of 1923. Among the best known banks, the First National led with earnings of $12,241,023, equivalent to a return to 122.4 per cent on its capital of $10,000,000. The National City Bank, America's larg- est commercial banking house, reported earnings of $9,794.932, or 24.4 per cent on its capltal of $40,090,000. . RUSH TO BUY STOCK. Simmons Company’s Offer Gets Many Subscriptions. NEW YORK, January than half of the employes of the Sim- mons Co. have subscribed so far this year for 83,000 shares of its common stock at $32.50 & share on the install- ment plan somewhat similar to the plan operated by the United States Steel Corporation. Officials of the company expressed surprise that so large a percentage of their workers had availed themselves of this latest offer, because a year ago they held more than 75 per cent of the common stock outstanding. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT MARKET IS AROUSED By the Assoclated Press. MELBOURNE, January 31.—Wheat circles of the rest of the world have stirred considerable excitement and activity in the grain markcts here. By the Associated Press CHICAGO, January 31.—Specula- tive buying stampedes in the Chicago wheat market this week have in- volved total transactions the largest on record, as well as lifted prices to a famine level. Compared with a week ago, wheat this morning showed advances ranging from 1% to 10% | a bushel, with corn 2% to 27 up,| oats at 1% to 3% gain, and provisious 5 to 20 down Big Day on' Record. It was on the day when wheat prices reached a maximum of 2.05% a bushel, May delivery, that, ac- cording to the Government supervisor, 111,827,000 bushels changed hands here in a single period of & hours and 45 minutes. Next day, prices in Win- nipeg suddenly collapsed 10 a bushel, and the following day commission houses in Chicago took protective measures against untoward conse- quences likely to result from smaller traders being swamped by quick wild changes in value. To insure rela- tive safety all around as far as prac- ticable, deposit of margins of as much &3 35 cents a bushel was required. whereas the usual deposit seldom ex- ceeds 5 cents. Real Shortage Exists. Back of the preceding big rushes to acquire ownership of wheat was a generally admitted world shortage of 760,000,000 bushels of bread grain, as compared with last year. Further- more, it was apparent that many countries which ordinarily export wheat had become importers to a greater or lesser degree. Whether the needs resulting from the short- age could be tided over until at least July 1, next, the advent of a new wheat harvest In the United States, was the issue on which traders d vided. Provisions Turn Weak. Corn and oats shared in the flurried buying, purchasers taking the ground that the usual ratios of value had been disturbed as a result of the soaring of the price of wheat. Piling up of stocks of lard weaken. ed the provision market. COTTON QUOTATIONS GO LOWER TODAY Early Offerings, However, Are Well Absorbed—Cables Disappointing. By the Associated Preas. NEW YORK, January 31.—The cot- ton market opened steady at a de- cline of 2 to 4 points under a little selling for local and southern ac- count and in sympathy with rather disappointing Liverpool cables. HUGHES. “Taking a Loss.” A woman wrote me the other day asking advice about two speculative stocks which had been left to her by her deceased husband. Both were selling below the price at which they were originally purchased. Like other investors In that position she did not “want to take a loss” as she put it. Would these stocks “come back’ was what she wanted to know. Of course I could not tell her nor could anybody else. The factors which govern the move- ment of stock prices are too diverse and their operation too complex to permit of analysis even by the ex- perienced. All I could do was to give my Inquirer the facts about the finan- cial condition of the two companies she named and tell her she must either make up her mind to continue her speculation (for that Is what it amounted to) or to accept the situ- ation, sell her stock and reinvest in good bonds. She probably considered my advice useless, but it was the best {Teported for the correspon IBANK CLEARINGS TOTAL$109.562616 January Figures $10,000,- " 000 in Excess of Same Month Last Year. BY CHAS. P. SHAEFFER. Bank clearings of local institu- tions during the month ending today amounted to $109,562,616, Charles E Bright, manager of the Clearing House Association, announced this morning. This sum s almost ten million excess of the $99,845,145 & month of last year, and is only two million in arrears of the monthly peak, reached December last, when clear- ings reached the huge sum of $111,- 728,231 The figures testify to the tone of confidence and prosperity prevalent throughout the country and show g gradual increase ‘n all lines of locaf business rather than flashes in a feu particular lines, The Washi in on Clearing Housy Association was organized in 151a, In that year clearings for Januars totaled but $32,645,806. Two yearq ago they amounted to $94, 03. Fewer Business Failure: Commercial failures in the United tes this week totaled 525, or 11 below last week and 36 above tha corresponding week of 1924, accord- ing to R. G. Dun & Co. Although the South, West and Pacific Coast had more defaults this week, these wers offset by a reduction of 31 in the East. Railroad earnings in December in- dicate a new record for that month, reports of 69 carrlers showing ag gregate net operating incoms of 378,227,000, an increase of 22.4 per cent. Should the roads still to re- port maintain about the same per cent of gain, the net total for the month will reach $86,000,000 against $63,694,000 in 1923. This would bring the year's net for class one roads to around $985,000,000, representing a return of 4.99 per cent on property valuation of $19,745,000,000 taken at the end of 1923, Fifth District Prospering. Business conditions generally ex ceeded expectations throughout the fifth federal reserve district, the month review of the Richmond Fed- eral Reserve Bank states. “A decided feeling of optimism has ccently developed In the business world, and on the whole the fifth district appears to be in a position that justifies this feeling,” the review declared. “While Fall trade slow in opening up in 1924, and September. October and November were all some- what disappointing, distinct signs of fmprovement became visible in No- vember as soon as the slection was out of the way,” it was pointed out “No boom in trade seems to be ex- pected.” the review continued, “but virtually all of our correspondents profess to believe that the next few months will witness enough trade to keep every one busy and return reasonable profits to manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. CHICAGO, January 31—Wheat took an early downward swing in price today, with numerous traders acting on an opinion that for at least the time being the market had dis- counted factors tending to lift values A decline in Liverpool quotations gave a further advantage to sellers here, and so too did expectation of heavy world shipments. On the set backs in price, however, buyers be- came more aggressive, and succeeded In rallving the market to nearls vesterday's latest figures. The open- ing, which ranged from % to 2% lower, with May 2.02% to 2.03 and July 1.69% to 1.70%, was followed by a moderate additional decline and then by rapid changes In which re- turns predominated. Corn and oats were relatively firm Buyers ocontinued to show a prefer- ence for them on account of less severe margin requirements than in wheat. After opening unchanged to % off, May 1.34% to 135, corn sagged a little further and then scored gains all around.
