FEATURES. Two-Piece Ensemble of Coat Sort BY MARY MARSHALL. There are advantages in the two- plece frock and advantages in the one-plece frock, but at present there seem to be very, very few women ‘who do not find that the advantages f the one-pieco frock overbalance ose of the twe-plece sort. On the face of it, it is easler to put ono piece on than two. Besldes, ® one-plece frock s usually Btraighter, scantier, less bulky. And at Southern Winter resorts is indica- tive of Spring fashions generally, then we may safely prophesy that the ensembles to be worn in March, April and May in the North will be for the most part of the frock and coat sort, not of the tunic sort. Of course, there is nothiug really new in the ensemble idea. The thing that is new is the interest that Ameri- cans of all classes are taking in it For years exclusive dressmakers here A7 Sy WOMAN’S PAGE. and in Paris have been making wraps of various sorts to go with the frocks they made, and many women have had wraps to go with most of their frocks. Such an arrangement, of course, may have drawbacks for the woman who has her clothes made at home or by a.dressmaker in a small way, because a frock usually offers fewer obstacles than a coat. The little dressmaker can make a frock, but you hesitate at Intrusting a coat, cape or other sort of wrap to her. The sketch shows the type of en- semble that seems to be gaining favor at Southern resorts. It is of sand- colored flannel, with a straight, long flannel coat. 4B h h IN NOVEMBER, THE ‘MAYFLOWER | | A PARTY SETOUT INASMALL BOAT To FIND A SUITABLE SITE FOR A TOWN AND SELECTED PLY- IMOUTH, A SPOT WHICH HAD BEEN CHARTED BY APTAIN TONN SMITH OF VIRGINIA - " . What greater excitement in the life of a girl than when &« gentleman bares his head before her, signifying that she is grown up! And, what more refreshing to tho tired business girl in a crowded elevator? The custom of gentlemen to bare thelr heads before a woman and otherwise as a token of respect is a relic of the age of chivalry when the knights did not appear in public ex- cept in full armor. They were en- cased from head to foot in mail, the weight of which can be judged from an ilustration of King Willlam's men carrying armor to a ship, where the hauberks or coat parts are being carried each between two men on a pole running through the sleeves It became the custom for when entering a gatheri to doff his helmet, imp o safe in the presence of friend: Though originally baring the head was not primarily, as it is today, a mark of deference, it is ono of the many little acts of courtesy that are direct survivals of the ways of the knights of old, of whose unquestion- able influence upon our civilization and our culture they are mute evi- dence. an will when she gets going and the Corona is working smoothly.) It is 0 very easy to overeat, with all the tempting delicacles of the table and the concentrated calories in the con- fectlons served at the soda fountain, to which the fat girls seem to gravi- tate so much. When you consider how simple it s to slide 500 calories down the esophagus, in the shape of a chocolate marshmallow nut sundae, and how painfully laborious it is to burn the 500 calories walking sev- eral miles or taking other active ex- ercise, is it any wonder that so many fat people like to blame it on grandma?
