By the Associated Pres: TUCSON, Ariz., January 9.—The ca- reer of & woman who commanded the réspect of that rough-and-ready ele- ment which prospects for gold from Arizona to the Arctic regions of Can- ada and Alaska was closed when the body of Miss Nellle Cashman was low- ered into its frozen earth vault in Vie- toria, B. C, Friends today recalled the days of 1877, when Miss Cashman came to Arizona, following the lure of the gold. In the early 80s she “grub- staked” several of the State's present millionalres on the gamble they would find a “strike” in the Tombstone, Ariz, gold field. Later she used the money returned by those men to finance & trip to Alaska, where she outfitted and “mushed” into the in- terior, agaln seeking gold One of the first of the daring band of women to enter the frozen, un- charted flelds of Alaska, she served as nurse at many mining camps, at the same time prospecting and stak- ing her own claims. It was recalled that only last vear, when she had reached the allotted ago of three &core and ten, the “champion woman musher of the world” - mushed from Koyukik to Seward, Alaska, a 750-mile snow trail. Miss Cashman's last visit to friends in this State was in De- cember. MRS. M. P. HIGGINS DIES. Was Leading Figure in Parent- Teacher Movement. PHILADELPHIA, Pa., January 9.— Mrs. Milton Prince Higgins, Worces- ter, Mass., one of the founders of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, died suddenly early today in the Bellevue-Stratford Hotél. She became (il during the night from acute dilation of the heart. RITES FOR SERGT. RYAN. Full Honors Paid Marine at Arling- ton Cemetery. Funeral services for First Sergt Michael Edward Ryan of the United ates Marine Corps, who dled in New York City last Friday, were held at Arlington Cemetery yester- day. Full military honors were paid at the grave, with a firing squad of Marines and a detachment of the Marine Band to render last honors. Sergt. Ryan was attached to the Marine guard of the U. S. S. Engineer Officer Formerly Was on Duty Here. Col. Francis R. Shunk, a retired En- glneer officer of the Army, died at Tucson, Triz., last Sunday, according to word just recefved at the War De- partment. Col. Shunk was from Har- risburg, Pa., and was graduated from the Military.Academy In June, 1887, near the head of his class, on which ac- count he was assigned to the Corps of Engineers, During his long career he had charge of many important en- gineering projects in Oregon, Cali- fonia, New York, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and in the Philippines.
