BODIES ARE HUNTE IN SALTVILLE MUCK Eight Still Are- Missing. Rites Held for Other Vic- tims of Tragedy. By the Associated Press. SALTVILLE, Va., December 27.— Funeral servicés for the dead and a never-ending - but fruitless search for those still missing; treatment and care for the injured in the emergency hospital here, were the wearisome loads’ under which the heartsick peo- ple of Saltville labored today, as the culmination of one of the disasters at'Saltville on Christmas eve, when thousands of tons of slimy, burning, white muck ran over a barrier, snuff- ing out the lives of 22 and leaving the horror-stricken survivors to gearch for eight which are still miss- ng. None of the bodies of the eight who are still missing was found to- day, but Assidtant Manager Wiley of the Mathieson Alkall Works, declared tonight that the search for bodies would be continued until the last vestige of hope of finding them had disappeared. A corps of 150 or more of the company's men were bus; grappling In the muck all day yes- terday and today, but today, their work was futile. The men, equipped with gum boots, rubber coats and grappling irons, continued to drag the river and all through the section which {8 now covered with the muck. The bodles of Mrs. George Stout and two children were taken to Green- d#le, where the were buried this afternoon. The tired and worn people of Salt- ville paid last tribute to Emory Clear, aged 7, and an infant, after which the afternoon. Funeral services also were held here for the*two children of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Walk, Laura, aged 7, and an Infant, after which the bodies were interred in 'the ceme- The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Prater and two -children were re- moved to Meadow View, a few miles from Saltville, and were*buried in the Alderson Cemetery there this after- noon. Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Ernest Johnson at Black- well Chapel at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The purchasing power of agricul- tural products declined slightly dur- ing November, says the Department of Agriculture's Decemer summary of conditions. The purchasing power index figure, based on the combined value of 30 products exchangeable for non-agricultural goods, fell from 90 in October to 89 in November. The 1913 figure, used as a base, was 100. Decline in value of some farm products and increases in the cost to the tarmer of other necessities were held responsible for the index de- cline. A slight gain in favor of the tarmer had been recorded in October. Live stock and their products, ex- cept wool, stood at marked disadvan- tage in the general commodity market, the department said, but a higher purchasing power next Fall was forecast if hogs and beef cattle follow their previous value cycles s e Births Reported. | Birthe seported_to_the.
