BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Sta: NEW YORK, December 20.—With the exception of the forelgn list the bond market closed the week with prices firm. There was no animated buying of the high-grade investments, such as United States Government loans or First Mortgage Ralls, but prices did not yleld further. On the week this group has been somewhat heavy and most of the Liberty issues are selling a shade lower than they did last Saturday. As for the high- grade rails, Atchison General 4s sold today at almost the same price as & week ago, while on the week there have been advances in a few cases, one of them being Central of New Jersey ©s, which made a new high record. Three Prominent Issues. Among rallroad cohvertible issues three bonds have been prominent, New York Central 6s, Chesapeake and Ohio 5s and Norfolk and Western 6s. All these have kept pace with thelr respective! stocks. Chesapeake and Ohio 6s are down on the week. The more speculative ralls show both| gains and losses on the week, largely because trading in stocks this week | has centered more upon the higher price dividend-paying sisues, the bonds of which do not react to speculative sentiment. The heaviness in the foreign group was hard to explain in view of the hearty reception accorded to the new | {ssues, such as the Greek 7s and the Belglan 6s. Both thess offerings were heavily oversubscribed and both sold at a premium as soon as trading in them was begun, with considerable reaction later. The Belglan 6s today dropped back to the offering price. There was some actlvity on the upside in the Hungarlan 7s first and the Jugoslav $s, but French bonds com- paratively weak. Advances Outdo Declines. Among the {ndustrials advances have been more numerous than de- clines. Copper shares all ars higher International Agricultural 68 jumped | 9 polnts this week. On the other hand, Virginia-Carolina Chemical T7s lost ground. In general the sugar bonds have been heayv. Total bond offerings this week wore over $133,000,000, marking it as one of the best of the year. Heavy Fiancing Abroad. By the Assoclated Prefs. NEW YORK, December 20.—With bond prices fluctuating within nar- row and irregular limits early today investment Interest again centered in prospective new financing, which is scheduled in heavy volume for next week. In addition to an offering of $10,000,000 in notes for the Krupp works in Germany, the market prob- ably will be called upon to absorb a | $40,000,000 bond issue for the Andes Copper Mining Co. and several small- er corporation issues. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 20.—Sensa- tional climbing by prices of bread grain this week have accompanied persistent indications of world scarc- ity of supplies. Compared with a week ago, wheat this morning was 3% to 8%c higher here, whereas corn was unchanged to 1%c lower and oats % to lo down. Provisions showed 27 to $1.20 advance. Despite huge sales to realize profits, the Chicago wheat market almost ords for the season. Meanwhile, signs multiplied that much of the demand here for future deliverfes of wheat came from European sources. Announcement of a material decrease of the domestic visible stock both of wheat and rye was promptly follow- ed by a rise to above $2 a bushel for choice grades of wheat at the prin- cipal milling center, Minneapolis, and before the week was ended some wheat there was bringing as high as $2.16. Reports of a wet harvest in Argen- tina and Australla added apparently to likelfhood of European need of unusual amounts of wheat from the United States before the next crop in this country is available. This pros- pect was further emphasized by an eastimate that the world crop is 440,- 600,000 bushels less than last years total. Another stimulating factor was disclosure that the condition of newly sown wheat and rye in the Inited States is below what had gen- erally been looked for. Immense marketing of hogs, which implied lessened feeding demand, had a depressing effect on values of corn and oats. Besides, Argentine corn crop advices were less pessimistic. Prospects of future shortage of hogs whs largely responsible for new high price records. CHICAGO GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, December 20.—Although wheat touched new high prices today, during early transactions material de- clines at once ensued. The opening, which ranged from % decline to % advance, with May 175% to 1.76% and July 1.61% to 1.51%, was follow- ed by a reaction all around. Feed gralns wers he After opening unchanged to % lower, May 1.29% to 1.29%, corm underwent a ecline. Oats started unchanged to 1 off, May 63% to 64%. Later all months showed a loss. Provisions were easy, influenced by corn weakness. WHEAT— Open. Hlfi" - LTl 1L72% 1734 1963 D1mg 2415 % ' 5ol e 1 December Moy Juiy LIVE POULTRY HIGHER.
