METHODISTS LAUD PROKIBITION WORK Board Sends Letter Praise for Efforts ta Make World Dry. Authorization of a Jetter to Methodists throughout the world regarding temper- ance and law enforcement was made at the annual meeting here of the board of temperance, prohibition and public morals of the Methodist Church. 5 Officials of the church believe that his letter will help to create sentiment to fulfiil the Methodlst desire to make the world dry. Bishen W. F. McDowell, Washington, presided at the meeting, and members of the board were present from all parts »f the United States. The following is the letter: “To the Methodists of the World: “The buard of temperance, prohibi- tion and public morals of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in its annual meet- ing of 1924 at Washington, D. C., United States of America, sends greetings to the Methodists of America and of the world. Praixe of Prohibition. “Your loyalty to God and to the Gov- ernment has been ever fixed and un- vielding, and your zeal for the general welfare of mankind Is known and acknowledged. That solicifude was never better expressed than In your efforts for the destruction of the legalized liquor traffic in America. the accom- plishment of which has been attended by economic biessings without parailel in histors, and by social relations of the greatest significance. “Let us.not be dlesatisfied. The ef- fort to make it appear that prohibi- tion is ‘e failure in the United States is animated by financial motives. In fact, the blessings of prohibition are manifold. It has stimulated industry, Increased the ‘output of labor, ac- celerated the accumulation of capi- tal, raised the general standard of living and increased the demand for necessities and legitimate luxurles, fllled our savings banks, lowered the death rate, crowded our educational institutions, destroyed the saloon and Eiven us release from arrogant tyran- ny of the beer trade. Saving of $5/000.000000 Annually. “It is conservatively, and we be- lieve accurately, éstimated tnai pro- hibition saves the United States ¢ach year not less than $5,000,000,00. 1t may indeed be confidently asserted that we have in the few years of Federal prohibition established a civ- ilization which, because of its general use of machinery and the rewards it | gives to the common man, thereby conferring upon him responsibility heretofore unknown. would be im- ble to sustain without the policy. o rejoice to record as the result of the recent election the definite and seemingly final defeat to the pro- posed policy of prohibition nullifica- tion. No politiclan of average Intel- ligence, and certainly no statesman, can ever again believe that it will be politically profitable to cater to the discredited sentiment for beer and wine., The approval by the people of Massachusetts of prohibition en- {orcement, an approval denled by an overwhelming majority only two years ago, demonstrates the disinte- sration of nullificationism. The still further reduction at the polls of the already pitiful minority of nullifi- cationists in Congress is a further demonstration. The Jaw must be bet- ter enforced. Progress !s being made in enforcement; further progress is certain. Perfection will never be at- talned In enforcement, but it will be approximated; and to the hastening of this day we invite your prayers and unremitting endeavors. “MIRACLE MAN” SUBJECT. Rev.
