12 STEWARDSHIP YEAR URGED FOR CHURCH Preshyterian Conference Sanctions Petition to General Assembly. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 13.—The Na- tivnal Presbyterian Conference as it closed last night formally sanctioned a petition to the General Assembly, which will convene at Columbus, Ohlo, In 1925, to set aside the ec- clesiastic: ar 1926-7 as “steward- ship vear.”” The petition voiced the belief that greater emphasis on the teaching that possessions are a trust and possessors trustees or stewards for the Kingdom of God would mean much toward Christiznizing “the eco- nomic and soclal order.” Speakers at a conference on stew- ardship preceding this action stressed the thought that stewardship meant “not only giving part of one's in- come to the church, but application of Christian principles to the whole business of getting and spending.” The petition, formulated by the stewardship secretaries, was passed on by the committee on findings as part of its report and as such adopt- ed by the conference. “I refuse to think of money as sordid,” sald W. R. Pattcrson of New York, controller of the general council. “Half of our church” he added, “comprises congregations having less | than 100 members. J. H. Tay- lor Presiding. The Central Union Mission will hold its first service in the audito- rium of the new bullding tomorrow at 8 p.m. Services will be conducted by Rev. James H. Taylor, pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church. The building has not been turned over to the mission, but use of the auditorium has been obtained be- cause the temporary quarters on 10th street are too small for the crowds which have recently been attending these services. It Is planned to hold services nightly hereafter in the new auditorium, the entrance to which is at 613 C street northwest. At the dedicatlon exercises for the building later on the auditorium will be' dedi- cated as the Ida Letts Chapel. Itwas glven to the mission by John C. Letts and is being named after his wife. Of the 1,000 bags which the mis- sion wlll distribute to needy children at Keith's Theater on the morning of December 24 there are still about 300 bags to be filled, and Supt. Bennett is hoping that some organization or individuals will find it possible to as- sist in this work. Mr. Bennett also wishes to make it known that those persons who desire to make a per- manent gift to the mission can do so in furnishing bedroom equipment for one child at a cost of $50 complete. Kyle Booth, will preach tomorrow on “The Suffering Servant of Jehovah and in the evening on “The Glory of the Lord.” CHURCHMEN TO HOLD VIRGINIA CONVENTION “The Man and His Charch” to Be Topic of Gathering at Roanoke. The Virginia Convention of the Men of the Church will be held in Roanoke February 17 and 18, accord- ing to the announcement of Rev. J. E. Purcell, executive secretary of the Men of the Church, Chattanooga, Tenn. The object of this convention is to reach all the men in the State of Vir- ginia who are in the Southern Pres- byterlan Church. No limitation 18 placed on a church as to the number of delegates to be sent. This con- vention was indorsed by the Eynod of Virginia at its meeting in Richmond September 9, and it is expected that this will be the greatest meeting of Presbyterian men ever held within the State of Virginia. The theme of the convention will be “The Man and His Church.” Some of the most prominent ministers and laymen in the entire South have indlcated their acceptance of the invitation to speak on_this program. One entire session will be given over to the work of the Southern Presbyterian Church in the Synod of Virginia. W. S.
