Russell Shores, sentry at Walter Reed Hospital res- ervation, was found In a secluded section in the southeastern part of the grounds shortly after last mid- night by the sentry who followed Shores on the same post. The sol- dier's cap was 4 feet away. A revolver with one shell exploded was 7 feet from the body. A bullet wound was in Shores’ left breast. Suicide Is Theory. Immediate investigation by hospi- tal authorities, agsisted by Detectives Darnall and Springman of police headquarters, led to the belief that the cause of the death was suicide. Coroner J. Ramsay Nevitt viewed the body this morning. He refrained from Q D \ % 272227, *City Club Shop" 1318 G St. Hahn’s Special Boy’s Shoe $2.95 to $3.45 ’ Hahn’s Special Girl’s Shoe $2.95 to $3.95 Boys’ and Girls Sports Socks Extra quality, with snappy cuffs. 45¢ 3 pairs, $1.25 Cor. 7th & K Sts. 414 9th St. 1914-16 Pa. The post which Shores took last night shortly after dusk is one of tH® most lonely in the grounds. In the immediate proximity the on'y building is the scale house, for welghing shipments coming Into the grounds. Georgia avenue, however, is only about 500 feet away. Shores reported last at 7:30 o'clock. When he had failed to report at :30 o'clock a search was started, but proved frultless. At midnight Pvt. tanley Kad)sh came on duty as sentry and in walking past a little knoll he saw a shadow darker than others. He walked over and found the body of his comrade. At the hospital where the body was taken it was found that the one bullet had passed into the lett breast and then taken a downward course through the body. It drop- ped to the hospital floor while ex- amination was being made. Two Letters Found. In the pockets of the young sol- dier were found two letters. One started “Hello, Russell” 1t ended, “From the Furnace.” It was evi- dently written by a girl. Another was @ letter that brought bad news regarding the iliness of a sister ot the youth. There were no marks of violence about the body C viduality — and simply marvellous quality for $5.95! And over 50 other “HAHN SPECIAL” fashions. In fact, there was nothing about the body or about the place where it was found to indicate any violence had preceded death. The only alternative theory to suicide considered by the hospital au- thorities at any etage of the investiga- tion was the possibility of accidental death. This was discounted, when it was definitely found that powder marks sur- rounded the region where the bullet en- tered the body. Shores was from Norfolk, Conn. Po- lice learned that he had been worrying over trouble of his brother Donald, also attached to Walter Reed Hospital, who is reported as being missing for some time. AIR FLIVVER PREDICTED.
