32 “PROPOSAL T0 SCRAP - ARMY STIRS ROW Sweden Aroused by Policy of Danish Laber Regime, Call- 1 ing It “Suicide.” News. HOLM, Sweden, September 13.—The plan of the Danish labor go¥- ernment to: “scrap” Denmark's army and navy has been received here with mixed emotions. The militarists— there is a strong militaristic party in Sweden—say that such a policy on the part of the neighboring kingdom Wwould be tantamount to suicide. The Socialists applaud the and are making extensive use in their oampaign for the forthcoming elec- tlons. The principal plank in their platform is disarmanent. The militarists point to Russi: declare that the century-old of invasion from there still exists. “Sweden,” they declare, “must not dream of reducing her army and navy. She would expose herself to the da ger of being overrun by Russial who, under the red flag, are just imperia}istic as they were under the banner of the Romanovs. We must strengthen our national defenses in order mot to invite attack from the East.” . Socinlists Vet Fearful. The Socialists pooh-pooh these con- tentions. They assert that Russia has no desire for war, and that even if she had she is in no condition, and will not be for many years to come, to a wanton waste to spend the Swedish Besides, the Socialists argue, with the methods and means of warfare chang- ing from month to month, it would be a wantom waste to spend the Swedish people’s money on fresh armaments. The recent visit of a large part of edish flect to all the important in the B: ic, except those of naval force can compare with Sweden’s since the war. In the opin- ion of the opponents of disarmament, THE SUNDAY STAR, surrendering this advantage would amount to sheer madness. Undoubtedly Russia has the largest air force in this part of Europe—a fact which the militarists emphasize in their campaign for more money for armaments. The Socialists counter with the suggestion that Sweden fol- ow the plan now under consideration n Denmark and disband her army and navy altogether, “since Russia, with her vast resources and her in- finitely larger territory and popula- tion, can always keep several jumps ahead of us in armaments.” Cite Unprovokea Attack. The Soclalists’ crowning contention is that if“case of an unjustified at- tack by Russia, Sweden would re- ceive the assistance of the great powers that can afford to maintain huge armies, navies and air fleets. As a matter of fact, there are few Swedes who really believe that at any time since the Bolshevist revolution in Russia has there existed any dan- ger of an attack by Russia. There are no more who believe that the Russian leaders are even remotely thinking of invading Sweden except with their subtle red propaganda, which so far has turned out to be a “dud.” Only the professional jingo- ists, of whom in proportion there are as many in Sweden as in any other country, delight in painting pictures WASHINGTON, of “red hordes” overrunning peaceful, unprepared Sweden. In the meantime, trade between Sweden and Russia is flourishing. As M. Ossinski, the Soviet Minister here, pointed out a few days ago, Sweden’s few years have exceeded the pre-war exports to Soviet Russia in the last average. Police Have Own Newspaper. The Scotland Yard police and detec- tives have their own newspaper that is published twice a day in London. The paper publishes all the news events of theday of interest to police- men and detectives and gives numerous pictures that enable them to apprehend offenders. Within a few hours after an offense has been committed police in all sections of London know of it through their own newspaper. The paper is distributed twice a day and great secrecy is maintained not to let its contents become known. e His Estimate.
