This date marks the 700th anni- versary of the reception of the Stig. mata of the Five Wounds by St Prancis of Assisi, founder of the Eranciscan order. Archbishop to Come. Archbishop Daeger of Santa Fe, N. Mex., himself a Franciscan, will be the consecrating prelate, acting as the speclal delegate of Archbishop Curley of Baltimore. He will be assisted by ecclesiastical dignitaries from the Washington parishes and the Catholic University, while heads of the various religious institutions will take part in the ceremonies. _The rite of the consecration of a church is an ancient one, in addition to being one of the most impressive and complex ceremonies of the Cathollc Church. Many writers see in this ceremony a continuation of the ceremonies of the dedication of Solomon’s Temple. However, it is certain that the greater part of this rite bas come down from the very earliest ages of Christianity, and in the ancient “sacramentaries” the con- secration ritual is substantially that found today in the Roman pontifical —itself an ancient ceremonial. The rite consists of three major parts: The blessing of the interior and exterior of the church, the en- closing of relics of two martyrs in each of the five altars to be conse- crated, and finally, the celebration of mass at the newly consecrated main altar. The Franciscan Monastery, with the Franciscan College and commis- sariat of the Holy Land. is located at Fourteenth and Quincy streets mortheast, Brookland. Catacombs Featare. “Rev. John Forest Donegan, O. F. M, commissary of the Holy Land, is superior. The catacombs are a re- production of those in Rome, where the martyrs are buried. Thé Cru- sader's Almanac (in English, Ger- man, Polish and Italian languages) is published by the commissariat in the interest of the Holy Land and its missions. With the sanction of the Holy See and the Cardinal Chancellor of the University, the Franciscans acquired in 1897 a site of about 40 acres in Brookland, D. C., and there erected a church and monastery known as Mount Saint Sepulchre, which con- tains the commissariat of the Holy Land in the United States. This institution also serves as a house of studies for graduate stu- dents from different provinces of the order, who are destined to teach. After finishing their ordinary theo- logical studies, such students follow special courses at the Catholic Uni- versity leading to major degrees. DECISIVE BATTLE FOUGHT AT YORKTOWN, VA. British and American Earthworks Are Still Visible at This ITis- toric Battlefield. From the Baltimore Sun. Yorktown is not usually considered the decisive battle of the American Revoluiion. Saratoga was really the decisiv: combat, but Yorktown is worthy of memory as the final fight. It was at Yorktown that Cornwallis surreniered to Washington and the indepeidence of the United States was achieved. 1t is said that Yorktown is the only Revolutionary battlefield in which the British and American earthworks are still distinctly visible. The peninsula on which Yorktown is located has never hecome densely populated, nor has it been largely cultivated. New earthworks were thrown up at Yorktown during the Civil War, but these are easily distinguishable from the Revolutionary fortifications. Maine was called after the province of Maine in France, in compliment of Queen Henrietta of England, who owned that province. For a step or two the craps shooters yielded, then sud- denly and without warning they rushed the officers. The policemen refrained from using their revolvers, although they brought their night sticks into play. When they had been forced back to the gutter, some of the craps shooters rushed past them into the street and picked up cobblestones. The street is un- dergoing repairs at that spot.
