TRAIN HOLDUP TIP FOILS BANDIT GANG Two Officers Shot, One Rob- ber Captured in Night Battle in Kansas. By the Associated Press. MEADE, Kans, September 3.—A note telling of a plan to rob the Golden Gate Limited, Rock Island train from Chicago to Los Angeles, found in a garage 300 miles from here, resulted in a sheriff’s squad frustrating the hold-up here last night. Two deputies were shot and perhaps fatally wounded in a battle with three bandits, one of whom was captured. The others escaped in an automobile, pursued by posses of officers, railroad men and citizens. Ralph Judkins, special agent of the Rock Island, said he understood the mail car contained mail worth $250,000. First Ignored Note. The note, found in a garage in Ross. ville, near Topeka, Monday night, shortly after three men had stopped for gasoline, was at first considered a hoax, but late Tuesday, on the pos- sibility that it might be of value, was turned over to Rock Island officials in Topeka. Last night, when the train came into Meade, Sheriff Earl Lepper of Meade County and a score of deputies were hidden in a box car. ‘When two of the bandits demanded that the engineer and fireman hold up their hands, the officers appeared and the bandits began shooting. L. V. Kenney, deputy sheriff, and Roy Lewis, a mail clerk, who had been deputized, were wounded, and one of the robbers was seen to fall, but he escaped with another member of the trio. Alonzo Pizneo, believed by officers to be one of the bandits, was arrested as he was climbing off the blind bag- ShipSpeedsto U.S. So Teachers May BeginTaskonTime By the Associated Press. HAVANA, September '3.—A cache of war materials was discovered yester- day by secret police agents at the Camoa quarries, near Havana, ac- cording to a story published by La Prensa. The material consisted of three modern tanks which had been dis- mounted and the various parts se- creted in buildings near the quarry with hand grenades, bombs, dyna- mite and other explosives, the story said. The tanks were of large size. La Prensa quoted the police as saying they were to have been used in an attack on Havana by the Veterans and Patriots last April when that or- ganization was active in fomenting action against the Zayas administra- tion.
