Fifteen local mutual savings banks, find- ing no outlet for their surplus funds, have turned to realty mortgages and today have about 30 per cent of their resources in llen, an Increase of ap- y\:n;imfllely $10,000,000 since July 1, 1923, These investments bear a fixed rate of interest, and the banks receive from them the same amount of in- come, whether open market rates for money go up or go down. These mortgages mature in about five years and represent from 50 to 60 per cent of the appraised value of real estate pledged as security. HOLLAND PACT SIGNED. U. S.
