PARKS The August Furniture Sale at the Palais Royal is always an event looked fcrward to by housekcepers of Washington, and will prove a veritable paradise for the new bride of June or August, for she will find many pieces designed especially for the comfort of the kead of the house, which add beauty to her furnizhings as well. Was there ever a piece of furniture that we all lcve so well as the Grandfather’s Clock? It almost greets one with a smiling face and its beautiful chimes as you enter the dcor. It gives one a feeling that it can always be depeaded upon, that whatever else happens it wil. = there, ticking the hcurs away. In the spacious center hall plan homes of today it is particularly lovely. The designers raust have had in mind the first new home of the bride and groom when they designed a wonderful suite of combination living room and dining room furniture. And not conly those happy people, but to others who prefer a very large living room rather than two smaller rooms, this suite is particularly pleas- ing. It is of walrut, and the octagonal center table may be lengthened ou! into one of the new narrow dining tables when desired. The chairs are beautifully up- holstered for use in either room, the side table is almost like a console tabie, with a mirror to match. Then. there is a long settee—but you will have to see it—it just isn’t possible to tell you how lovely it is. And another lovely piece is a magazine stand on wheels, which may be wheeled right beside your favorite chair, from one room to another, or onto the piazza. Besides the rack at the top, it has two shelves, and a handle just like a tea wagon. It is really one of the handiest as well as decorative pieces of small furniture seen for a long, long time. There is a very unusual folding desk, too, with two leaves opening on either side, making a practical desk, completely fitted with ink wells, blotters, etc. When the two leaves are closed it is an attractive table. A new smoker’s set that will be a constant delight to any man, contains a humidor under the table top, on which are the ash trays, and below a glass jar for cigars for immediate use. There are any number of new sets, from those which may be carried to any part of the house to the larger, completely fitted ones. Then there are innumerable little end tables, so handy, on which to place a lamp, a magazine or ash trays. They are different sizes and shapes, and will fit anly of the beautiful overstuffed suites which one may select. Beautiful odd chairs, upholstered in needlepoint tapestry, will arouse the enthusiasm of any woman, and the Coxwell chair, with its long, comfortable seat, will be especially appreciated by men. And there is no woman living but will enthuse over the beautiful new mirrors. The styles have changed in mirrors, as well as in clothes, and the new shapes and sizes with frames of walnut or mahogany are very lovely. Only one is pictured here, but it gives an idea of the newest ones. There is a great variety of shapes and sizes, from small ones to the very large mirrors. Then there is a new unframed mirror which has taken quite a hold on the popular fancy. One will find, too, among the odd pieces a tall ma- hogany palm or fern stand, with inner lining and drain, so that there may always be some green growing thing in the living room. They give such a touch of home to the room. f And here is one of the delight- ful, old-timey Martha Washing- ton sewing stands. There are several drawers in which all the small sewing materials may be kept out of the way and out of sight, and two deep compart- ments at_either end in which articles in process of making may be put. They make sewing a pleasure, and may be moved from place to place with little trouble. The Period secretaries in walnut, Adam, Queen Anne and others are mighty attractive pieces of fur- niture, and very often they are the one piece which will fit just right in some particular spot in one’s home. The Windsor chairs, always practical and com- fortable, are here in many different sizes. The new cane-back Windsor chair with a high, rather pointed back, is very attractive. For the telephone, that instru- ment of torture, which is also in- dispensable, a new garb has been invented. We have tried to disguise it in innumerable ways, with a little ald-fashioned lady with a boquet of flowers doing her best to hide it, or an open and shut box, which, Now- ever decorative, has no place among the furnishings. But at last, here is a smart little cabinet, with a chair to match, into which the telephone may be put, with the cords entering through the back, where it is always out of the way, Y3 ' except when in use. It looks well in the hall or in the corner of a room or almost anywhere. So there is one problem solved. . But come in and look at things for yourself. Even if you are not ready to buy at once you will enjoy seeing the new things. Any woman does.
