Best Showing in South. | | Freight trafic during the first six months in 1924 was more than 9 per ! cent below that forthe corresponding eriod last vear, when freight busi- on the railroads was the great for that period of the vear in { history, the Bureau of,Railway Eco- nomics announced’ today Measured in net ton miles, tabula- | tions of reports just filed with the bureau by the carriers show that dur- ing the first half of 1324 freight traf- fic amounted to 204,636.000,000 net ton miles, 20,850,000,000 net ton miles be- low the corresponding period last vear. Decreases by Districts. In the Eastern district the amount of freight business handled amounted to 104,353,238 net ton miles, a de- crease of 12.1 per cent under the cor- responding period last yvear, while in the Southern district it totaled 28,974,- 620,000 net ton miles, or a decrease of per cent. Freight trafic in the Western district totaled 71,307, 947.000 ne ton miles, 15.9 per cent below the same month in 1923. In the Eastern district there was a re- duction compared with June, 1923, of .1 per cent in the volume of freight business carried, while in the South- ern district the decrease was 13.8 per cent. Class 1 railroads in the Western district showed a decrease of 8.4 per cent. The average daily movement per freight car for the month of June 2 miles, 3.1 miles below the average for June, 1923, but 1.3 miles above the average for the same month in 1922, The average was also seven-tenths of a mile below that for May, 192 Carx Carry Smaller Loads. In computing the average move- ment per day, however, account is taken of all freight cars in service, including all cars in transit, cars in process of being loaded wnd unload- ed, cars undergoing or awaiting re- pairs and also cars on side tracks, for which no load is immediately available. In view of the fact that the railroads in June had daily an average of nearly 359,000 surplus freight cars and virtually no car shortage, the daily movement per car would naturally be less than in Juné, 1923, when the daily average of surplus freight ears was approxi- mately 53,850 and the daily car short- age more than 12,000 freight cars. The average load per freight car in June was 26.7 tons, 15 tons below that for the month of June last year, but 1.3 tons above the daily average for June, 1922. Compared with the average for May, 1924, it was, how- ever, an increase of three-tenths of a ton. POTATOES HIGHER.
