He is sur- vived by 'his widow and two_ chll- dren. He was born in 1869 in Wash- ington. His parents were descended from the original settlers of the Lord Baltimore colony. NEW YORK, August 8.—Dr. Had- ley Cannon, who was arrested last night on a charge of homicide in con- nection with the death in his office of Miss Monica Maloney of Brookline, Mass., denies performing the opera- tion which is belleved to have caused the girl's death, Thomas A. Gonzales, assistant medical examiner, sald to- day. The death certificate issued by the physician stated that death was due to peritonitis and heart trouble. The body of Miss Maloney was em- balmed within an hour and a half after she died, the police sald. Mr. Gonsales declared the girl's relatives were not notified either of her illness or her death. The prisoner told the police he was graduated from the Buffalo (N. Y.) Medical School 19 years ago. Ac- cording to the police he formerly practiced at Binghamton, N. Y. ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES. PHILADELPHIA, August 8.—Dr. George Arthur Pierson, professor emeritus of anatomy, histology and embryology at the University of Pennsylvania and a leading authority on anatomy and diseases of the spine and brain, died yesterday at his home here. Mrs. BRAZILIAN AVIATRIX ARRESTED AS REBEL Anesia Pinheiro Machado Charged With Having Flown Plane as Scout Over Sao Paulo. By the Associated Press. BUENOS AIRES, August 8.—Anesia Pinheiro Machado, Brazilian aviatrix and sports woman, 1S among a num- ber of persons who have been ar- rested by the Sao Paulo federal authorities for alleged revolutionary activities, according to a message from Sao Paulo. Senorita Machado was mentioned In offictal communiques during the slege of Sao Paulo as having lent her airplane to the rebcls. It 1s now asserted that she flew in it herself, scouting over the federal lines, and that it was she who flew over Santo and dropped revolutionary pamphiets in the streets and on the battleship Minas Geraes, a flight which gave rise to reports at the time that the battleship had been bombed. The aviatrix i¢ well known in Brazil for her athletic activities. She often wears men's clothes and is reputed to be an excelient boxer. Advices from Sao Paulo deciare that she frankly gave sensational teztimony involving various of the most prominent figures in the revo- lutionary movement. AUGUSTUS W. FRANCIS IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Augustus Walker Francis, 66 years old, a member of the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of the District of lumbia und a lifelong residen? of , died at his residence. 3 East Capitol street yesterday follow- ing a lingering illness. Mr. Francis was the son of Thomas Francis and Mrs. Lavinia Bryan Francis, who before him were old residents of this city. He received the greater part of his education at a private school here, known as Young's School. When ‘a_young man Mr. Francis went into the clothing business with the firm of Noah & Walker, who had a store near Seventh street and Penn- sylvania avenue. In later years he operated the business himself and re- tired about 10 years ago. He was for many vears known as an accomplished ~ baritone singer. often appearing in concerts and at various entertainments. He formerly lived at 1322 Massachusetts avenus and was married in the house bearing that number. Mr. Francis is wife, Mrs. Nellie Entwisle F and a daughter, Miss Katherine Francis. During the last few yvears of his life he had been unable actively participate in many social functions or activities on account of ill-health. Funeral services will be conducted at 627 East Capitol street tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. Hen ning Nelms. a close friend of Mr. Francis, will officiate.
