REAT _ ASKS CHURCHES JOIN "IN PEACE CRUSADE Federal Council Declares Time Has Cgme for Vigorous Prosecution of Anti-War Program. Declaration that the time has come for the “churches to orgarize and mobilize for constructive programs in the crusade to establish world peace” is made in a call issued today by the executive committee of the Federal Council of Churches, urging “practi- cal action” by church members to overthrow “the war system of the nations.” “Let them (the churches) refuse un- equivocally to support pagan inter- national policies or acquiesce in co- lossal and provocative preparations for super-pagan wars,” says the ap- peal. “Let them declare that, for na- tions no less than for individuals, the wages of sin is death and that evil is to be overcome with good. Christian citizens have the right 1 the duty to inquire of those who resent them concerning their ideas and purposes regarding the outlawry of war, and the embodiment in ap- propriate legislation of the ethical principles of the kKingdom of God in the relations of nations.” 3 DROWN WHEN WADING; ANOTHER IS RESCUED Victims, Two Girls and One Wom- an, Were Members of House of David Colony. There is just as much difference in them. Some are lazy, while others are great workers. Some are careless, while others are very careful. Some do not seem to care how they look, while others take the greatest care of their personal appearance. Some are very, very fussy about their nests and insist that they must be just so, while others do not, seem to care what their nests look like so long as they will hold the eggs and babies. Mrs. Hummer the Hummingbird is one of those who are very, very par- ticular. She is a very dainty little person herself. and everything around her must be dainty. So she builds the daintiest of nests. Jenny Wren had told Peter the truth when she said that Mrs. Hummer's nest looked like nothing in the world so much as a knot, a lichen-covered knot, of the tree in which it was built. Every little bit of lichen was placed with the greatest care. It looked as if it had always grown there. Now, there are so might ‘think that su, to have everything just s worth _while. _But M knew better. She knew that they were worth while. You see, she knew that the more perfectly that tiny nest was covered lichens the less likely recognized if seen. It wasn under anything or behind anything. It was in plain sight of any of the feathered folk who might happen to alight on that branch. Yet it was hidden. It was hidden in plain sight because it was made to fi per- fectly with its surroundings it seemed a part of them. So it was that when at last there were two tiny white eggs in it, g no bigger than the smal bean, Mrs. Hummer began sitting on them without a worry of any kind. Time and again other feathered folk alighted close be et did not see her. You see, she was careful not to move. Sometimes she would chuckle down inside. Once Welcome Robin alighted so close that h have reached out and touched her. But he didn’t see her nor the nest at all. ‘Tis queer how things When often they are people who care and pains were not Hummer She never left it when any one THE' .EVENING BTAR, 'WASHINGTON, ‘D. C., BEDTIME STORIES BY THORNTON W. BURGESS Was near to see her go. She never returned to it when she was at all likely to be seen. So” Mrs. Hummer kept her secret. Not even Hummer himself knew where that nest was. Many a bird bigger and stronger by far ~than Mrs. Hummer had more cause for worry than had she, even when the tiny white eggs had become two tiny birds no bigger than bees. Once Chatterer the Red Squirrel came running out along that branch. Mrs. Hummer was on the nest. She didn't SHE_KEPT HER BRIGHT EYES FIXED ON CHATTERER. move. She kept her bright eyes fixed on Chatterer, but kept perfectly still. She knew that Chatterer's eyes were sharp. She knew that there was lit- tle he missed. But even when he had run out almost to the nest she continued to sit there, motionless. She knew by the look in his ey, that he hadn't seen that nest, and she had a feeling that he wouldn't. He didn’t. Just before he reached it he jumped across to another branch, and again all was well. (Copsright, 1024, by T. W. Burgess.) Wife Freed in Murder. FLORENCE, 8. NEW YORK, June 21.—The National Association of Audubon Societies an- nounced today that it has re- ceived as a gift from Mrs. Grace Rogers, sister of the late Paul J. Raliney, hunter and explorer, & tract of more than 26,000 acres of marsh lands for a bird sanctuary in Vermil- lon Parish, Louisiana. This area of 'approximately forty square miles, in the opinion of Dr. T. Gilbert Pearson, president of the association, will play an important part in the preservation and increase of all species of game birds in North America. The reserve Is Intended as a mem- orial to Mr. Rainey's interest in wild life, and covers two-thirds of the fa- mous winter gathering place of wild fowl on the shore of the Gulf of Mexlico. This land, Dr. Pearson sald, lies just to the west of the state wild life refuge which was given by Mra. Russell Sage for the same purpose. The new territory, however, is glven outright to the Audubon Soclety in- stead of to the State of Loulsiana.
