. SUNDAY SCHOOL BODY TO HOLD CONVENTION Bhi Mu Sigma Fraternity Sessions . to Open Tomorrow, Will ¥ Continue Three Days. The Phi Mu Sigma National Sunday School Fraternity, Inc., will hold its annual convention for three days, be- ginning tomorrow at 8 p.m. in Im- manuel Baptist Churcn, 16th street and Columbia road northwest. Rev. Gove Griffith Johnson, national chap- lain, is to preach the annual sermon. All Phi Mu Sigma men in the city are invited to be present and sit in a body. The business sessions of the con- vention will be held Monday and Tuesday nights in the room of Alpha Chapter, at_ Mount Vernon Place M. 1. Church South. Tuesday night the new ritual will ‘be demontrated by the initiation of a bona fide candi- date by the degree team of Alpha Beta Chapter. All local fraternity men are extended a cordial invitation 1o be present to witness this new work The fraternity was founded by Dr. Clifton Power Clark at the Mount Yernon Place M. E. Church South, May 27, 1908, with twelve charter members. The second chapter was es- tablished at Emory M. E. Church South, Brightwood, D. C., January 27, 1914, Grew Until World War. The fraternity grew rapidly until the world war, when there were more than 1,200 members in the thirty- two chapters in the District of Co- lumbia, in Sunday schools of the fol- lowing named denominations: Meth- odist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal South, Methodist Protestant, 'United Brethren. Christian, Lutheran {ihree branches), Protestant Episcopal, Presbyterian, Baptist, Congregational and Evangelical. Chapters were located in the fol- Jowing named states: Arkansas, Colo- rado. Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohig, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. During the world war the fraternity almost as a unit answered the call to the colors, and because -{: this many chapters became inac- ve. One of the purposes of the coming convention is to establish the fra- ternity along new lines and devise Wways ‘and means to re-establish the old chapters. and to spread the work to new fields. A new ritual wiil adopted and necessary changes made in the constitution and by-laws. Na- tional officers will be elected for the ensuing vear. PLANS SUNSET SERVICE. Rhondda Williams, pas- tor of Union Congregational Church, Brighton, England, will speak at 11 am. and 8§ p.m. tomorrow at the First Congregational Church, 10th and G streets northwest. The Tuskegee Singers will give special music at both services. Dr. Williams arrived in this country early in May to fill a large number of important speaking engagements, beginning with addresses at Harvard University. He has had a unique ministry covering many years in im- portant fields. He be preaching when only thirteen and one-half vears old. At the age of twenty he entered the Welsh ministry at Dow- lais. The Central Presbyterian Suaday School opens its regular deily vacation Bible school Mondsy morning. Plans have been made for instruction in the Bible, hymns and craft work. There will be classes for children from the ages of four to sixteen, -and about twenty-five teachers have volunteered their services for this work. In connec- tion with this school the large play- ground adjacent to the church will be used. Slides and seesaws and # sand box will be provided. A volley ball court and two tennis courts have been made. The playground is used in the afternoon by the children of the com- munity. A supervisor will be on the playground all day.
