VETERAN KILLS SELF; WORRIED BY ILLNESS First Shaves and Writes Note for Wife Before Firing Fatal Shot. VICTIM OF TUBERCULOSIS Grimaldi Was Associate in Barber- ing Business. John Grimaldi, a veteran of the world war, walked into his barber shop at 1519 Tth street northwest shortly before 10 o'clock today, care- fully shaved himself, penned an im- passioned note of farewell to his young wife, stepped into a small rear room and shot himself to death. Still suffering from the effects of his experiences in France and a vie- tim of tuberculosis, Grimaldi is be- lieved to have broken down under his physical sufferings and decided to end his own life rather than wait for the white plague to do it for him. He died instantly. Gave No Iatimation. Grimaldl gave no intimation to cither his wife, with whom he lived at 2814 14th street northwest, or to his associate in business, Frank Phil- 1ips. that he contemplated suicide. Al- though he had not been at the shop since last Wednesday, inquiry at his residence disclosed that he showed no unusual melancholy. His assoclates were not surprised when he drove up to the shop in a taxicab this morning and before pre- paring for the day's work carefully attended to his own appearance. The note he left on the stand in front of the chair he used. A moment later there was a loud report, and assist- ants in_the shop found Grimaldi's lifeless form stretched on the floor. Letter to Wite. A hurried call was sent to Emer- Hospital, but before the am- bulance arrived the police patrol trom the second precinct arrived, In charge of Precinct Detective Frank Howard. Grimaldi was rushed to Garfleld Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead by physicians. His body was then removed to the morgue. Part of the note the man left for his wife was written in the Italian Translated, it read as fol- E nez, dear, my own dear girl, you are a Saint Martlere. Please do not hate me. Good-bye." When Mrs. | Grimaldi was notified of her hu band's death she collapsed, and ascribed it to his physical condition, which was steadily growing worse.
