PROHIBITION CUTS TRADE Russian Use of Crop in Alcohol Manufacture Ends. z BY GEORGE R. WITTE. Correspondence of The Star and the Chicago Dally News. REVAL, Esthonia, May 25.—Estho- Tia has been experiencing a serious financial and economic crisis, the principal reason for which was the failure of her potato crop last year. In 1922 Esthonia produced 707,000 #ons of potatoes, of which 46,000 were exported and 76,500 were used in the manufacture of spirits. The spirits industry is a very important source of yevenue for the government and is ene of the most profitable industries §n the country. In 1922, 2,000,000 gal- Jons of raw alcohol were produced by 276 Esthonian distilleries. Last year, ©n account of the poor potato crop the output of spirits amounted to only 1,200,000 gallons, although the Bumber of distilleries had increased 2o 193, Russian Prohibition Cuts Trade. These figures are small compared Svith those of the pre-war period, swhen Esthonia was part of the Rus- sian empire and supplied the Rus- slan hinterland with potato spirits. 3In the fiscal year ended June 30, 1914, there were 277 distilleries in Estho- Tia which produced 9,500,000 gallons of spirits. This was made into the Russian national drink, vodka, con- Sumed in large quantities by prince and peasant alike. Since the revolu- ton In 1917, Russia has prohibited the importation and sale of spirits and Esthonla’s spirits industry has Jost its most important market. While prohibition has dealt the Es- thonian alcohol producers a severe blow, it has compensated them to a certain extent. Esthonia, since be- coming independent, has been almost Gompletely surrounded by “dry” coun- | tries, with Finland only a few hours Poat ride away and Sweden, which is *near dry,” very handy. It required no great imagination on the part of the spirits producers to see that those countries offered a market that would | prove even more lucrative than either the home or the Russian market. So Esthonia, in 1920, became the West Indies of the Baltic. Germans Capture Smuggling Trade. By the Associated Press. TUSKEGEE, Ala, June 14—With ..magic touch, Dr. George W. Carver, negro scientist, who for the past thirty Yyears has beén a member of the fac- .uity of the Tuskegee Normal and In- dustrial Institute here has opened a freasure trove of nature hidden for Centuries. Concealed under the guise of a sweet potato, & peanut and a pecan, nature had hidden a myriad of useful prod- ucts, and these have been disclosed by Dr. Carver, who was born in a slave home on a Missouri farm. The record of this scientist today stands: More than 100 commercial prod- ucts from the sweet potato, 200 from the peanut, and more than sixty from the pecan. Not stopping with that, Dr. Carver has transformed a lump of southern ciay into beautiful colors, one of which is the Bgyptian blye, the secret of which was believed to have died and been lost to the world with the an- clents of the Nile Valley. LONDON, June 14.—On almost every week end that he spends at Chequers €ourt, Ramsay onald puts on his plushed fours, but up to the pres- ent he has been unable to take enough time off from his two jobs of premier and foreign minister to indulge in golf, which is his only outdoor recreation aside from the good old-fashioned exercise called *going for a walk.” During the extended parliamentary recess over Whitsuntide, however, the premier went to Scotland with his golf bag, and, partner with former Pro- vest Archibald of Buckie, played in & four with his son Alestair and Baron : Thompson. the alr minister. BERLIN, June 14.—The bobbed-hair craze which has extended pretty well all over Europe, as well as America, has brought a boom to the German scissors industry, according to recent trade re- ports, but at the same time has placed manufacturers of hairpins in the dol- drums. A number of wire, bone, ivory, tortoise shell and celluloid comb fac- tories are reported to have greatly re- duced their forces, and in several cases to have shut down altogther owing to a lack of demand for ornaments used to support the hair or to keep the head- dress in place. A staid old trade report says: “Manu- facturers of scissors are working full time at Solingen and other parts of Germany. Orders are recorded from all parts of the world, and prices for stock goods vary from 8 to 12 marks per dozen pairs which corresponds to a price increase of approximately 50 per cent as against the prices before the war.” Some of the hairpin, comb and orna- ment manufacturers are considering tak- ing up manufacture of scissors or some- thing which bobbed-hair wearers or other faddists will not be able to do without. LONDON, June 14—Having kept the British Empire running fairly well for the last six months, the labor government is golng to turm its hand to a really difficult job and try to- suppress sweepstake betting on the horse races. Home Minister Henderson the oth- er night told the House of Commons that the law against sweepstakes would be enforced impartially. He was immediately reminded that thirty-seven Labor party organiza- tions should then be the first to be punished, for all had sweeps on the derby. 1t was also, suggested that Mr. Hen- derson might find means of prosecut- ing the whole country at once and be done with it, for nearly every- body buys a sweepstake ticket or two at derby time. The sweeps are organized for all sorts of charitable and benevolent purposes. T ‘Wales Raps Pretensions. LONDON, June 14.—The Prince of Wales is developing the philosophic mind.
