DR. STOKES SPEAKS AT G. W. U. PROGRAM Delivers Baccalaureate Sermon at Commencement Fete Held }» Yesterday. URGES GOOD CITIZENSHIP Calls on Graduates to Consider Es- sential Principles. Urging that the first duty of every citizen is to test all public questions independently, from the standpoint of the publie good, Dr. Anson Phelps Stokes of Lenox, Mass.,, and former secretary of Yale University, in his sermon at the 103rd baccalaureate service of the George Washington University, yesterday declared, that for good citizenship it was necessary to “hold fast that was good” to all our institutions and beliefs and to aveid all eVl in personal life. These ends, he declared, could best be kept through the following of Jesus Christ and the acceptance of his re- ligion. “It is vitally important that we should make ‘haste slowly,’ determined that in our passion for improvement, we do not throw overboard the points of view, customs and institutions of long proven value. We must con- tinue the process of advance, while keepingour feet firmly on the essen. tia i o testing bave proved ‘ clared Dr. Stokes, who stated that the expression of individual convic tion even though unpopular was es- sential in a democracy where public opinion rules, and is merely a sum total of the independents judgments. Socialism and Modernism. “Many new theories are clamoring for attchtion. When held by large numbers of thoughtful people they must have some good in them; but it is most important in accepting these new truths, we should not ‘give up the good in existing ideals and insti- tutions worked out and tested by our ancestors. So it is with Socialism in politics and with ‘Modernism' in religion, with continental standards in social life, with early specializa- tion in education and with ‘new schools’ of medicine,” declared Dr. Stokes. Dr. Lewis delivered an address lauding Rear Admiral Herbert Stock- ton, who died Saturday. Dr. Lewis said ; “The death of Rear Admiral Charles Herbert Stockton, on May 51, in conjunction with the 103d an- nual commencement of George Wash- ington University, stirs the universi- 1y with deep sorrow and tender af- fection.” Was Our Admiral” In our hundred yi of histors we have names that | in our book of remembrance there is no diarer name than his. He was president eight years, from 1910 to 1918. In the nadir of our hopes he came to us; in the upper firmament of a new day he left us. He said to us, ‘You are my c S, You may always come to me. We shall proceed under thortened sail. We shall weather the storm. He was our admiral, and we who sailed with him through those cight ycars will remember him evermore. “The life of abstract loyalty but all of th onally inter- preted. And sons and daughters of their alma mater tender to Mrs Stockton today their svmpathy and love because the precious burden of the years has been personally in- terpreted by Admiral and Mrs. ock- fon. In the grief of this day Mrs. Stockton reminds us that Admiral Stockton would not wish us to change any commencement event. And so we stay with our heritage to which he zave us the priceless example of such devotion.” The service was held in the Con- cordia Lutheran Church, 20th and G More than 1,200 persons were at the occasion, including graduates, ent and Mrs. Lewis will a reception tonight at 7 a'clock at the Washington Club, 1701 ¥ street, to the faculty, graduates and parents of graduates.
