HYDE LOOMS STRONG FOR VICE PRESIDENCY Missovri Governor’s Indersement by State G. 9. P. Brings Him I Prominently to Fore. Unanimous indorsement by the Mis- souri Republican convention of Gov. Hyde of that state for the vice presi- dency has brought into the national political limelight & man already widely known in the west, The Mis- souri delegation to the Republican national convention will present his name and urge his nomination. As the head of the presidential ticket will have been selected from the east, it is being argued that a western man should be given second nlace on the ticket, and in the field of western men it is claimed that Gov. Hyde towers conspicuously. He comes from a doubtful state. On this score Gov. Hyde's supporters point out that when Missouri joined the Republican column in 1904 it stepped out of permanent allegiance to either of the old parties, Since then only a few thousand votes have sufficed to swing the state. It is argued that the Republican party will need all the doubtful states next November. Missouri's eighteen electoral votes will be required by the Republicans and the nomination of Gov. Hyde, his friends claim, will 20 far toward getting them. Gov. Hyde, it is said, knows the west and understands its problems, but at the same time he is lacking in radical thought or support of radieal vagaries He hus a record of efficiency as an exeeutive and of ability in his service as governor. is said ofbim that he is a good vote- getter, his notable victory in 1920 demonstrating his qualities as a cam- paigner. administrative t e The dear old woman had been trad- & at her favorite grocery store for This morning she came in much perturbed. The grocer had put in a new line of goods for sale, She ob- ected to it strenuously. She liked grocer, but she disliked his new line more. DENOUNCES “PARASITES.” Authors and Composers’ Lawyer Opposes Newton Bill. “Parasitic” practices of motion pic- ture and radio broadcasting com- panies would be perpetuated by en- actment ~f the Newton bill, ths House patents committee was warned yes- terday by Nathan Burkan of Naw York, counsel for the American so- ciety of authors and composers. 'he measure, proposing to exempt motion picture and radio companies from the payment of royalties for the reproduction of popular songs, he as- serted, would unconstitutional, as it would destroy property rights un- der present law. Mr. Burkan sald the motion ploture industry began as a ‘parasite” by taking ‘novels, stories and plays for reproduction without leave or license until stopped by the Supreme Court. Broadcasting is operated purely for profit, he added, and radio stations are competing with the legitimate theaters, and, if permitted to con- tinue unbridled, will reduce the thea- ter to & state of beggary. Exemption of the two industries from royalty payments, he predicted, would destroy initiative in the flelds of music and make this country de- pendent, as formerly, on foreign authors and composers. properly Awning your home, rain pecting. THE APPLE PALACE PROPOSED FOR STAUNTON MEETINGS Harvest Home Festival This Fall Also Is Planned for Vir- ginia Belt. Special Dispateh to The Star. WINCHESTER, Va, May $.—An apple palace will be built and a har- yest-home festival held mext fall in Staunton, Va., if tentative plans out- lined at a meeting here last night are acceptable to business and or- chard interests of Augusta county, of which Staunton is the county seat. It was pointed out that Winchester had adopted the Shenandoah Valley apple blossom festival, that Harrison- burg had general headquarters of the valley prompting organization and that Staunton should be entitled to the fall festival and apple palace. The decision to offer the project to Staunton was unanimous. ‘The proposed apple palace, it was said, would be the first projeot of the iind in the east. It is planned to make it the meeting place of numer- ous conventions of fruit growers, commission merchants, rallroad traf- fic managers and manufacturers and dealers in orchard supplies and by- products of fruits.
